Ours in 14yrs old and is just turning 700 hrs. Wow ! That's fifty hours a year. Don't you like boating Rog That's excessive use, I'm on the verge of buying a 2007 boat that has 230 hours on the clock. It seems common for couples to dream of buying a boat to retire onto then one becomes unwell and it takes a few years before they realise they'll never recover enough to get back to their dream life. Repeat twice and that's that, a virtually unused 10 year old boat with shabby paint.

What engine in that boat? My mate is a continuous cruiser, and had a new engine fitted last November. He's done more hours than that already Rog

Over our holiday I'm going to try and get an idea of just how accurate our fuel gauge is My fuel gauge is 100% accurate.

Foxy, doesn't your engine have an hours counter display (like a mileage counter in a car). Nope - and I don't rven know how they work. Also, the number of hours doing what exactly - idling, running at 2000rpm or running at 33,000rpm? You need the whole history of an engine to get some idea - every oil change, every acceleration before it's warmed up - all the repairs and maintenance done to it. Have you asked TW Marine about your engine? Good guys they are. Make a list of what you want done and give 'em a call. Worth a thought. Greetings from Heathrow!

Mine is a mechanical counter and just clocks up time whenever the ignition is on, although the engine is always running if it is , it's not possible to leave the ignition on accidentally because the oil pressure and charging alarm buzzers sound until the engine is running. I've measured it against the timer on a mobile phone and it's fairly accurate.

But it is the first indicator most people go on (as with cars) before looking for other evidence to corroborate the hours displayed. Safe journey home. Rog

Over our holiday I'm going to try and get an idea of just how accurate our fuel gauge is My fuel gauge is 100% accurate. I'll put a picture of ours up another day. It became redundant when I moved the tank across the stern, I reused the old filler deck fitting so as there was no trip hazard on the rear of the boat, this meant using a 2x 90° elbows and 2m of hose to get to the tank filler. Wooden dipsticks don't like going round bends! We kept the dipstick as she has had it so long and it takes no space hanging on the bulkhead, seemed a shame to burn it.

Shameful to have done so few hours. Still, without knowing all the circumstances one shouldn't judge. I would have to have a lot of cash to be able to own a boat like that, and never use it Rog
