Trailering or carting 60 or 70 kg of crap along the towpath to catch a few one and a half inch perch on 500g line π As others have suggested, it gets you away from the nagging shrew for a few hours.

Currently in Galloway, visiting brother in law, a mate of his brought round a 6lb rainbow trout yesterday, fresh caught with a fly. Just eaten a decent portion for lunch. Yum! Β The Life of Riley, eh? Of course! My brother snaffled the EU domain, www.thelifeofriley.eu.com . As for bats, never seen so many bats so close as last night, on the end of the harbour wall at Garlieston, there's a small building with roof overhanging the jetty, the bats were zooming about, so close we could hear the woosh of wings. Our car***n is moored right on top of the sea wall, overlooking the bay, high tide just happened. Off for a walk along the seashore shortly. Despite my blind hatred of maggot drowners cluttering up the cut, I do have a folding sea rod in the caravan, was going to try spinning for mackerel but tide times are wrong. Our caravan is tiny, a Freedom Jetstream, it gets us to places we can't take the boat. Top Gear abused one, tying it to a balloon, no doubt some of you approve.

All right well it seems we have a lot of anti anglers on this site! Me? I fish probably 3 times a week, more in the winter. I fish mostly on the canal. It's convenient, no lugging tackle around or having to drive somewhere or in my case, ride somewhere. I fish elsewhere too though. Sometimes I'll get the lure tackle out and fish a lake for pike. I go up to Scotland once or twice a year, fly fishing for sea trout. An odd session or two after carp or big roach on various lakes that I have membership of adds variety. Mostly though, I'm on the cut. Canals are fantastic places to fish, for the discerning angler. OK, pulling out small roach or gudgeon one after the other might not be the biggest challenge. On the other hand, some places have specimen roach, rare these days, due to cormorant activity. There are less cormorants operating on canals than lakes, you only see the odd one. Surprisingly big bream can be caught at night, along with large roach/ bream hybrids. Carp are rare up north but mostly big, a real challenge. Large perch and pike are the staples in winter. Fish worm, lure or fly, it's up to you. You'll catch more and bigger fish away from canals but nowhere else offers the same variety, and to catch the larger fish is a real challenge. I love canal fishing, some of the best fish can be found on them, so much better than the commercial waters. Rochdale to Middleton, Slattocks being the best on the Rochdale canal was the best in Lancahshire many years ago untill they decided to reopen it for a dozen or so boats or so to use. Killed the fishing all together. Pike to 30lb, Tench close to double figures if not there. Carp over 25lb and Roach and the rest, all in superb condition and plentiful. Such a shame. I do both also, less canal boating maybe from now on, for this reason and more, a lot very grumpy self centered folk on the cut who tar all folk with the same brush for some reason. If a boat ever passed me i was happy to say good day to them and great them. And i can tell you a lot have faces like a slapped ares and there noses so far up there arses it is unbelievable. If folk stopped bitching then things would be sooo much happier a sit works both ways. Chin up all you grumpy fisherfolk and boaters and be the better person, doesnt hurt. Cant wait to get the boat going, so much boating AND fishing to be done
