and you have your boat name on your t shirt. very hard.😂    It's named 'Desiree' actually. I knew that as well. two threads named after it. I'm sure I was blonde at birth.

The worrying thing is,Mr Stabby looks totally normal for a boater. The only thing against him,is that he looks more like a yokel(think Wicker Man film)than Harold Shipman.

That's a ridiculous way to hold the tiller of a narrow boat If there is a sudden problem like a major prop foul (boat is moving in the picture) the rudder and therefore the tiller could be thrown sideways and push you in the water. One does not stand inside the arc of the tiller handle when going along.

Traditional stern narrowboats are traditionally steered while standing on the counter. If I do ever get thrown into the water then I'll just have to climb out. But thank you for your concern.

Lol..I suppose if one was pedantic, then yes, it is better to stay outside the arc. However, I don't, when I go over something and the tiller moves, I just jump out of the way..or duck...a lot...

The only place from which I can steer my boat while staying out of the tiller arc is inside the hatch. I do sometimes steer from there, particularly when on relatively straight sections of canal, where I can control the tiller using the small of my back. Otherwise, everywhere on the counter is in the tiller arc. I've had numerous events involving the tiller and prop, but none have ever thrown the tiller violently sideways and even if such an event did, so long as I kept hold of it then I wouldn't fall off of the boat. And even if I did, I can swim. I see plenty of other trad-stern boaters steering from the same positions as I do.

I always steer from inside the hatch, standing like you are in that pic feels awkward.

(or shout instructions to the OH as you are going over - tried that, it doesn't work!). If you do end up having to dismount a boat still in gear, jump out as far away sideways from the boat as you can. Especially if there is a pub nearby on the tow path. Same if you fall off a boat pissed when moored up. My brother did exactly that once and ended up disoriented underneath the boat. He only survived because someone pulled him out.
