The good thing about going home and working upto christmas, is that the nights are rapidly drawing in and days shorten ridiculously. At least once we're back on board the days are starting to lengthen again and very quickly the signs of spring become noticeable. Rog How does one find a job that only requires you to work 3 months of the year? That's pretty much what I do. I'm an HGV driver and I'm registered with an agency in Coventry. I work for a month or so, save as much as I can, then go off cruising until the money runs out, then rinse and repeat. I earn less than my personal tax allowance so in the following tax year I get a full tax rebate for the previous year and I also get working tax credits because my income is so low.

It is so much quieter in winter, but can be harsh. The longest we were frozen in was 10 days at Long Itchington. We could have moved, but would have been ice breaking, so elected to sit it out. Coal and gas was available at Warwickshire fly boats, as was waste disposal. The Coop and Two Boats pub were very useful too. We are fortunate that once back on board we have no time constraints. I can see the problem for Telemachus with deadlines to keep. Rog God - that must have been hell, with only eight pubs within comfortable walking distance.

Rog How does one find a job that only requires you to work 3 months of the year? i tend to only work in the winters, leaving the summer free to work on my boat. I suppose it's just a choice between more money or more of your own time to enjoy your life.

We did a pub crawl of the Long Itch pubs, Jane, a mate also frozen in, and myself. Great fun. That's why Jane got the nick name 'Ten gins Jane'. We do appreciate how lucky we are Rog

There are six in Long Itchington, and we started at the Green Man, then the Harvester, the Buck and Bell, Duck on the Pond, Cuttle and finished at the Two Boats (which was and remains our favourite). There is also the Blue Lias, just up the Stockton flight, and the Boat at the top of the flight. It's a great place for a pub crawl, but some have funny opening hours, so you have to plan ahead. We did Rog Sorry you also said grade them, so as pubs with best at the top Two Boats Buck and Bell Green Man Harvester Duck on the Pond The Boat Blue Lias Cuttle

I don't know the date of your survey, but in the last couple of years The Boat has improved greatly and The Duck has become a bland grey soulless pastel thing. Otherwise I'm pretty much in agreement with your list. Except I like the Blue Lias. It's still the 70s there and I keep expecting Barney Rubble and Wilma to stroll in.
Being able to moor outside gives pubs a boost on my pubometer (but even so the Cuttle is still last).

We had a meal at The Boat in April I think it was.
Much improved in it's current incarnation, and the food was good.
I like the Blue Lias too, but they are marked down in my book, for closing at 2.30pm in winter. I like pubs to be open when I take the trouble to walk to them (as selfish as I know that is).
The Cuttle is the only one I could not recommend. I really didn't warm to the pub, the staff, or the customers.
