We had box hedges at our mansion in morningside in Edinburgh where I lived briefly as a small child. They were nice but not particularly high. More of a decorative hedge than functional and we did not need to shield ourselves from neighbours as there were high walls around the perimeter for that. SWMBO browses gumtree regularly, the other day she saw some box hedging going free, a mile away from home; she arranged to collect it the next available day. An hour later the same plants were offered for £150. She phoned again and confirmed that we would collect them free the next day; clearly a breakdown in communication between the man who wanted them gone and the wife who saw an opportunity. I collected them - we now have 50 plants, each about 2ft high above ground and 1ft wide, for nowt. The next day she saw some on special offer at Aldi - smaller and £10 each !!

For a thorn hedge to keep pretty well anything out you can't beat pyracantha, it's evil nasty stuff, but pretty too.
