I remember it also from early school days. Tony Robinson did quite a good documentary series on WW1 a few weeks back.

I learnt about it at school and then in the ARMY it was serious stuff, peace had broke out soldiers had to be sent to the rear and New troops posted in!! If the people on the ground had been in charge the war would have stopped then, and they would have all gone home through lack of interest!! The Generals realised that they were an endangered species so they kept the war going, shame more high ranking generals etc wernt in the front line maybe they would think twice about their actions. As for politicians they would be used as bullet stoppers
