Thanks Nigel and Tony for your posts. And its a good point about modern pleasure wide beams being more similar to unloaded commercial boats re width.
Let's hope nobody starts making deep draughted wide beams with two accomodation levels !

Gods teeth ! Caravanners have done enough damage by causing Brexit we don't need them buggering up the canal boat licensing strategy as well.

Started on your book yet ? Peter. Not yet, Peter, still thinking about it. Maybe if I put up enough posts about commercial boating there would eventually be enough to compile a book out of them, . . . still not sure that there'd be all that much interest in it, though.
I'd be interested Tony, I've certainly developed an interest in the history of the canals and navigable waterways and the boats used on them. I may have ended up on the water 12 years ago through circumstances, but I've also embraced the life and love nothing more than making best use of our boat, and part of it for me is understanding the history of it all.

But unfortunately I think they have already decided the direction of liscencing stratergy. Let's hope not though let's hope Dave is right. It just seems wrong charging widebeams up too double for being able to navigate less of the network.

Just interested, should narrowboats over 57 foot get a discount too? Should be still able to get prompt payment, if appropriate. Also be able to get historic boat if applicable as well. And of course get the 40% discount associated with "river only" liscence. So I suppose the answer to your question is yes the ones that apply to the particular vessal. these preposals from crt mean that a lot of these discounts will go.

They seemed to be worried about a lot of replies asking wont it require a new act of parliament to change things. They are currently changing a lot of things reducing management etc so who knows Dave has been right about this stuff in the past
