Whilst away from the boat for three months, the two centre lines have been on the roof as normal, centre to stern. They have become quite slimey and difficult to grip, so I have given them a good wash in quite a strong bleach solution. That has improved the situation, but I wonder if the bleach may weaken them. I don't want to heave on a centre line for it to break and my boat unexpectedly go off alone on a little adventure. The ropes are the nylon mix type. Rog Rescue services use household bleach to disinfect both nylon and polyester ropes. A 10% mixture of household bleach (with active ingredient of Sodium hypochlorite at 5.25% concentration) with room temperature tap water is used for not more than 10 minutes followed immediately by thorough rinsing with tap water. The above may give you some clue as to if you have damaged your ropes.

You assumed I hadn't realised? Rog No, I’m sure you did, but some other people reading are too thick to realise, so it has to be explained.

If I was concerned about damage to a rope I would arrange a stress test like stopping the boat with it in a situation where it doesn't matter if it breaks. Just to see if it is shagged.
A couple of years ago one of my 18mm staple spun polypropylene ropes on my barge parted when I was moored at the water point above Molesey lock and an idiotic tosser came past much too fast in the Richmond Venturer a 85ft Luxemotor used as a charity boat. He was moving too fast and had to rev the shit out of it in reverse once he got into the lock which pulled the stern away from the lockside - totally incompetent and uncool - dickhead skipper. Anyway the draw from the larger boat in the lock cut pulled my boat forwards then backwards sharply and the stern rope just gave in. I had used it to come up the lock just before that and molesey lock is quite a deep one with quite a bit of movement so the rope was reasonably useable.
In my situation it was sun damage. It was lucky it wasn't in a lock as that could have resulted in negative outcomes.
