Nick, the advice you gave Kris all those years ago may have been useful, technically speaking, but it was delivered with puke inducing condescension that can only have been deliberate.

I have to say it Nick....
You've said some very nasty things about johnv, gazza and jenlyn to name but a few.
Once this cycle begins, in my experience "he started it" doesn't really count for much.
I enjoy posts from you and kris, and hope you both just move on.

I like to call it “giving as good as I get”. I never initiate nastiness with people who haven’t already been nasty to me. Yes I know, I could just let it go (ooops...) and not doing so is a flaw, but it seems to me to be less of a flaw than the people who were nasty to me because they didn’t like my opinion on something.

By the way, you said you were turning the heating on, on your boat.
Is this by phone?

Well that may have been your take on my written word. As I have often said, when there is a choice of interpretations of the written word, there is a tendency both on here and CWDF to take the most offensive possible interpretation as opposed to giving the benefit of the doubt. Maybe you and kris didn’t like the style of my writing at the time, but is that really a justification for a 5 year campaign of hate? You say “can only have been deliberate” which kind of makes my point. You have absolutely no evidence or justification for that statement, it was just how you chose to interpret my written words, typed in good faith at the time.

By the way, you said you were turning the heating on, on your boat. Is this by phone? Rog Yes. By text message. It normally works flawlessly but twice now I’ve had “Operate fail, unknown command” back. Must be snow on the aerial! Fortunately it’s worked second time. Although we have mostly drained the water the calorifier is still full and I’m worried that with the very prolonged sub-zero temperatures it could freeze. I rather wish I’d left the immersion heater on!

He does sometimes post some good stuff, some of his humour is just right too. The near perfect man they nailed to a cross, the rest of us are out of luck!

That's very impressive, especially so if it works Is it diesel heating? Just trying to ring the office. We've only paid up to today, but we'll probably wait until Monday to return now as there's no point being onboard frozen inside a marina. Rog

Rog Most gsm alarm systems have the ability to turn on lights, heating and even start an engine with the addition of relays. I have it set up for bilge pump as well. I've never used the heating or lighting side whilst away from the boat, given the fire risk. The units themselves are pretty cheap at 200 ish quid, but require a bit of electrical understanding to wire them up. It also operates two cctv cams and a two way conversation ability. The SIM card I use costs about 10 quid for a year.

We've only paid up to today, but we'll probably wait until Monday to return now as there's no point being onboard frozen inside a marina. Rog Yes it’s a Mikuni. We’ve had the boat 7 years now, I installed it (the remote system) shortly after we got the boat. Cost about £130 IIRC. It has been on continuously ever since and only once became unresponsive and had to be rebooted, which is not bad for 7 years! Normally it is flawless so I presume these two hiccups are weather related. It’s programmed to leave the Mikuni on for 90 minutes then turn it off. The justification of course is that we fly down from Aberdeen and when Jeff was working, this often meant a late arrival on Friday night at say 11pm. We really didn’t want to arrive at a freezing boat at that time of night. I’ve also configured it to report the present battery voltage in response to a different text. It can also report the temperature but that isn’t much good as it’s the temperature inside the box of electronics which is quite a bit higher than ambient. I also plugged a microphone into it, and it sits near the Mikuni so after I've texted the heating on, I can phone the boat and listen to the Mikuni startup sequence. We are back down a week on Sunday (11th), so I hope the cut might have melted by then as we have a 2 week trip planned. oh and on SIM costs, because I’ve configured it not to acknowledge commands, it only sends a text when I ask it a question which is not often. I think I have topped the SIM up once, and recently had to get a new SIM as the Orange one was discontinued which, with £5 on it, will last several years. Calls and texts from my phone are of course included in my monthly allowance.
