I'm fairly interested in the traditional paintings of narrowboats and whilst browsing thro TB tonight and seeing a partially blocked view of Telemackus's back doors, I was intrigued at the artistry adorning them. I couldn't make out as to its origins or perhaps its meanings relevant to the owners but was fascinated at the deviation from the traditional Roses & Castles themes, perhaps Nick will post a few clearer pics & discription? Im not a big fan of ' roses' and dislike fancy painted tat / buckets / mops etc on boat roofs that these traditional tossers in their collarless shirts seem to obsess over, ;but I do like seeing different interpretations on 'castles' decoration so thought a thread on different rose & castle / random boat decoration paintings would possibly be interesting? I have a wonderful older lady friend who has a great talent for drawing and painting, here's some her work to kick off.. Night time castle scene for 'sleepy' part of boat... Day time views for general bright living area.. And a cloudy/ overcast pic... And finally, I inherited a lovely 'hanger' off Lollygagger's last boat which demonstrates a different, more detailed castle take, think it was done by Phil Spieght? So ... Has anyone else any nice artistry they care to share? π

We didnβt really want roses and castles, a bit too βLaura Ashleyβ for a butch boat! Steve Hudson tended to do R and C for his well-deck boats, and our design for tug style boats, but we persuaded him to do that style on our well-deck boat. I have no idea of the origins but I believe it might be something to do with BCN tugs? Our side hatch has the same inside design. Hereβs a better pic (complete with snow trying to get in!). I know I will offend nearly the entire complement of TB when I say this, but roses and castles and Rosy and Jim are nearly the same thing in my mind!

I quite like proper old decorations not keen on new stuff though and as my boats are modern they just have plain hardwood lining to the steel doors or solid hardwood doors with glass. No decoration at all.
Not narrow boats though to be fair. When I did have narrow boats most had plain doors but one I owned briefly (70ft motorised Bantock) had some old painted doors on it which were very nice.

To be honest, I like it when people paint their own.
I like the individuality and ideas, however good or bad the execution.
I was complimenting a woman recently on her 'modern art' side hatch doors, only for her to tell me it was wallpaper! Looked good!
My mate got two large colourful ceramic tiles with koi carp on (he has a large garden pond) and mounted them on his doors. Not traditional other than in the brightness of the colours but look good. I'll see if I have a photo.
Ours were painted by Ron Hough of Braunston, so very traditional, and I couldn't paint over them.

Now here's some contemporary back door artwork. Personally, I would have chosen a different colour scheme for the Humvee, but never mind. The lines and curves look mighty fine to me

I will offend nearly the entire complement of TB when I say this, but roses and castles and Rosy and Jim are nearly the same thing in my mind! I was never a big fan of Roses and Castles TBH and all that 'canalia' tat is awful IMO. When this boat was finally finished and it was all plain oak it was just too clinical & sterile, thought long n hard about letting my friend loose with her brushes but glad I did now, it's given it the lift it needed although with hindsight I would of sacked the Roses off and just had 1 centre panel of castles on each door! Now Rosy and Jim...no never, although I did have a pair that came with my widebeam, I couldn't evict them due to my daughters being 6 at the time and they used to enjoy playing with them as we cruised.....they stayed with the boat when I sold it!( the dolls not my daughters! π) Before & after..

Going back to the op about trad painting I wonder if the deliberate use of perspective in the castles pictures is a way to make a very small cabin feel larger ?

I too find R&C's all a bit 'twee' especially on a modern boat, it smacks of 'fake' to me. Our rear doors and side doors/hatched were just plain old wood with a few plaques, but I like(d) the simple look rather than a rather cluttered appearance of R&C's which really should be reserved for historic boats upon which they were originally painted. They would have looked completely wrong on our boat.

Thanks Nick.
The top photo is cropped from a photo of our boat. Ron Hough doors (with a fly net up as it was summer).
The second is my mates koi carp tiles. Love the colours and the fact it's his own work.
I hate to see wood doors, as it looks like nobody can be bothered.
