They may simply have been following the instructions on the balance beam

Well stag weekends are not renowned for being sober or sensible.... Wonder if the picture footage will feature at the wedding

You were right with the pic of lock 11. I heard about it Tuesday evening from a mate who lives in so'rby marina. I've heard that all the wooden panels etc in Shire boats are varnished both sides, so just need a rinse and a wipe after a cilling. Apparently the boat cilled, began to fill then slipped off the cill and sank completely.

Yes, but WHY did it cill? Do we have any juicy details about who these plonkers are, and did they cry when their deposit wasn't returned? I think the deposit should be the price of a new boat.

I think the keep boat forward of cill marker sign can be misinterpreted. I could imagine someone who had no idea how a lock worked and was a bit bolloxed might suddenly notice the sign and pull the boat back to where the cill marker is (if they knew what that was) thinking that it should be as close to the top gate as possible.
And as for going up it is impossible to keep the boat forward of the cill marker..
Seems a bit far fetched but I think its plausible myself.
The sign should say keep boat at least x feet from gates when operating locks. For novices. Anyone with a 70ft boat should either know or have been clearly instructed what to do.

I cant understand the need for hire boat companies to hire to stag/hen parties, there must be enough demand to say no.

It would be a bit dodgy to then turn them away. Depends on whether the boat is booked in advance. There should be something about people carrying gallons of beer should be refused I suppose.

On a lot of the web sites in the terms it says no same sex parties above a certain number, i guess they just book and then pick the rest of the party up around the first corner.

Where do insurance companies stand on this, if a lock is clearly marked as stay forward of cill, and you sink because you get caught on the cill, do they pay out, should they pay out?

Well, if they won't pay out because the river sign is in the red (higher level than usual), then I should say no. The group of monkeys that hired the boat should bear the full cost of their idiocy.

It's up to them to prove you wrong. Statement to insurance company: I was well clear of the 'Cill Marker' when it suddenly happened.

The group of monkeys that hired the boat should bear the full cost of their idiocy. Isn't that why we pay insurance for? Most bad things that happen are caused by idiocy (either your own or by someone else) - seem to remember a member on here recently pranged their car and had to contact their insurance company...

Isn't insurance about 'reasonable and acceptable' risk?
Surely a cilling is entirely possible for anyone, with a moments inattention or distraction.
