Nasty! But for it to get into the filter, surely the tank must have been more than 3/4 full? Is there a level gauge / something to stop the flush when tank is full? I’d suggest routing the vent hose so it runs up all the way. If there is a low point it will at best collect rainwater which will block free passage of air like any U bend. Dump-through is best, you can see the level! Telemachus has a heads not far removed from a medieval privy? I'm shocked and stunned!

He is still stuck trying to persuade us peasants to upgrade from the bucket

No, my head is only close to the privy when suffering “the morning after the night before” - which fortunately these days isn’t often. Anyway, dump-throughs are great, you get to check your poos and then, if there are any large recalcitrant ones, poke them down with a stick. Very satisfying!

He is still stuck trying to persuade us peasants to upgrade from the bucket I'm with him there, a thunderbox is an awful thing, I had years of that with the Mayland and latterly Fairlight. It matters not if it's a porta potti or a Thetford C200+ carrying a suitcase of sewage to a (often filthy) hole in the ground was absolutely the worst aspect of boating for me. I couldn't go back to that - ever! We have a flexible bucket on board that is used for general purpose cleaning, it is also the emergency toilet god forbid it should ever be required though!

For an explanation as to why the heads are so named; have a look at this fascinating website. toilet-guru.com/ship.phpThe pictures of the French hire boat heads are absolutely revolting. The bog brush explains why a Jabsco manual toilet should be replaced with a macerator at the earliest convenience..... Never mind the rust on the Egyptian ferry, I have had the misfortune to come across a bog like that in a factory while working in rural France. I waited till we got to the hotel to go for a crap. The bit of rope hanging from the ceiling was indescribable! Hitler's throne look's like it could of done with more regular application of Toilet Duck.

This thread reminds me of a couple who rocked up in a widebeam and had never had a boat before. They had a pump out and I did notice that 2 months down the line they had not moved despite living aboard. A few days later they admitted to having had a poo explosion in the heads, one of them had pressed flush and the flood gates of poo hell opened. It took them 2 days to clean up, they apparently didn't know that they had to take the boat to be pumped out. Even now the thought makes me snigger.........a lot.

Composting best of lot even now they are helping my tomatoes ans spuds grow big Great on a mooring. Not so great whilst cc. I understand some marinas are currently banning composting loos, allegedly due to people merely bagging and binning waste rather than allowing nature to take its course. Rog Why Rog? I just dig a hole and bury it, has worked for the last 7 years

I'm not sure, and don't even know if it's true. I think it may have been on CWDF, but can't remember. The suggestion was that people were not truly composting (storing for 6 to 12 months) but rather just 'bagging and binning' rather like dog waste. I don't think there was any suggestion of bags hung from trees however Rog

Following a scenic saunter to sunny Sweden to take an elderly GDOS(grumpy decrepit ole scotsman...his label not mine) friend to give his son much needed respite I have returned and checking out wot is new, I find this thread..... I see my rutsack escaped a smelly aromatic encounter....though its damp mildew odour may or may not have been worsened by the encounter...and I did not PEE in the wardrobe!! I've checked out some rather nice boats....purely in research and pushed my elderly friend on his ride on scooter through the streets of Malmo...he 'forgot' the charger and as we all know too well battery power only lasts so long!...I thought it was hilarious..my opinion may or may not have been influenced by the vino consumed earlier.. Now my next task is to catch up on all the important stuff. Soon off again..no word on House sale front..one of my sons is there holding fort/doing the gardening and hopefully keeping all spic n span..
