I'd vote for polyhemp. As for length of centre line, what ever works for you.

I've used 16mm synth hemp, floats, kind to my hands. Long enough to come up to a bollard and then more or less to the lock gate. I store them in a coil on the roof near the slide. I have 2 for ease, don't have to flip over the stuff on the roof. I like having two as well. makes life slightly easier.

With 2 it means you also have a set of spring lines. My soft shackles make shifting ropes around easy. Unless you prefer to moor on slack lines and enjoy shouting SLOW DOWN tourettes style to anything that moves.

The difference between stern lines and centre lines is that stern lines don't get snatched by wayward branches. Mine are as long as they can be without fouling the prop if they find their way into the water.
