does anyone know if a 60 footer can make it? - the locks according to the book are wide enough to go diagonally but unlike the calder and hebble where it says a 60 footer can do it, the Nicholson doesn't mention it on this occasion.... Hi, been lurking on here and the other place for a while, but never joined because I didn't have anything useful to contribute. I am a member of the volunteers task team on the Ripon Canal. I have checked with my supervisor, the locks were built for a maximum of 57', but 60' will squeeze through. The tightest wiill be the last lock, Rhodesfield, but it would be at owners risk. My usual day on the canal is Thursday, I hope I will be able to welcome you to our lovely canal. And maybe Telemachus as well.

Ignore it and dont give him any, he'll only buy sweeties with it. Chicken flavoured cat biscuits go down a treat. Anyway, good local knowledge, no excuses now Quaysider - at your own risk!

Thanks. At the moment I am wondering if there will be any water left in the canal system by August, but if there is we'll hope to see you! We are 59' so hoping to squeeze through that and the HBC.

Thanks for this Duncan and welcome on board... I rarely have anything useful to contribute (a bit like foxy) but don't let that worry me ... on here, anyone's rubbisjh is a valued as everyone elses' btw - there's also no need to worry about where to put apostrophes as Mr Stabby will correct them for us! We're currently in Ferrybridge - heading to Selby today with a view to doing the selby/naburn bit tomorrow and then work it out from there... I suspect we'll make it to the basin on Friday sometime.

The canal is fed by the River Skell, into the basin at the head of navigation. At the moment levels are ok, but will be really low if we dont get any rain before the school holidays.

Well, we head on to the river at 11 this morning.... having to return at 6.30 am on the 10th to avoid the bigger tides - We can get up early but I've had to explain to Wendy that on a boat there really IS another 6.30 in the day... she's not having it though.
Having just missed watching a couple of boats coming in when we arrived last night but saw the look of fear on one woman's face, I an only imagine their entry back into Selby lock was interesting. There did seem quite a flow though with the tide receeding though. I suppose it will have to be one of those 180 degree turns, drift back and then power on into the lock approaches? - suggestions welcome. I think the life jackets WILL be coming out shortly!

Notice Alert Ripon Canal Starts At: Bridge 5, Rentons Bridge Ends At: Bridge 5, Rentons Bridge Tuesday 3 July 2018 16:00 until further notice Type: Advice Reason: Water resources ________________________________________ Original message: Due to the current dry weather we have raised the water levels of the Ripon Canal and therefore there is a reduced air draft at Rentons Bridge close to Ripon Motor boat club Marina. This will be ongoing until such time as the levels of water in the River Skell increase which is our source of water for the Ripon Canal. Can skippers of large craft please slow down and approach the bridge with caution, checking the water level indicator on the side of the bridge to calculate the current air draft. During the current dry spell, to conserve water resources on the Ripon canal, please share passage through the locks where possible. You can view this notice and its map online here: canalrivertrust.org.uk/notice/13411/reduced-air-draft-rentons-bridge

Cheers Duncan, We're leaving York shortly and aiming for Ripon Basin for tonight. The longer boat is no longer coming - at least not today as they had to go to get on a train and head to the old folks home their mother is in... looking like a bleak time for them.

Well, we arrived in ripon last night... took 8.5 hours from Lendall Bridge in York to here...
The river cruise out of york was nice enough... but it did get a bit boring - slight excitement where the river nidd (now a trickle) came in as it narrows big style there and we met a narrowboat and two paddleboarders coming the other way RIGHT on a bit where a fallen tree had reduced the already narrow channel.
When we finally left the Ure and turned on to the Ripon canal we'd had enough and probably didn't appreciate how well looked after the canal is - certainly the paintwork, landings and channel. The water is SO clear here it's beautiful. Shame about the last (or 1st depending on which way you are going) ) gate which leaks terribly.
In theory you can break up the journey from York byy mooring at Linten lock overnight... when we got there, there were a few grps tied up on the only 2 spaces available and whilst there WAS space at Boroughbridge, by then we'd decided to plod on to Ripon.
My oldest friend is calling over this afternoon with her recently berieved father for a cuppa and look at the boat and tonight we have visitors coming we met on holiday in Cape-verde a few years back who live in town.
BACK to York Sat morning.
PS- the 9mph handbrake turns upstream with the tide pushing us from Selby to Naburn were interesting.... pant changing interesting. NOT looking forwards to getting back into Selby lock with the tide pulling us the other way on Tuesday.
