Came through this lock, uphill this morning, and immediately reported the condition of the top lock gates to C&RT's emergency number.
There were so many holes in the top gate (the wood of which was clearly rotten and in places hanging off) it was a wall of water as I entered.
C&RT have closed the lock siting damage to it, and Jane tells me reports on facebook claim it's caused by a boat strike.
I cannot say categorically that a boat has not struck the gate, but it was a rotten leaking gate I reported, and such a strike would not have caused that.
I assume it's better to allow a little misdirection of blame, than admit to a lack of preventative maintenance.

Its an easy excuse though isn't it 'boater damaged the lock and now we have to fix it, we are great' blah blah blah...
Proactive maintenance is what is needed, not the fix it when it breaks approach they seem to be working to.

I've taken photos of loads of these T&M locks where the gate or the lock walls are leaking.
Couldn't get to take a photo at 62, as I was struggling to get the boat into the empty lock against the weight of leakage.
Pity as it was impressive.
Lots of work needed or there'll be other stoppages I'm sure.

Doesn't look good. Lock shut after Rog passes through due to failing gates. Mr Stabby will have a field day

CRT now tell so many lies, it's not surprising in my view that they have no idea what truth means.

We came down through the lock the day before we met Rog at Wheelock and was leaking so bad I commented to Jeannette that I wouldn't want to ascend in a full length boat. My thought at the time was a bit of 10mm ply over the outer face would save a lot of water.

Hope you have plenty of photographic evidence this time as - once again they know - it was a boat what done it and we know where you are.....!
Met x
