And then the British Government says they "are doing all they can" (ie. fuck all - playing golf tomorrow as it's Sunday) for the British tourists in Turkey. Why go to Turkey (or any Middle Eastern country) on holiday? If you're looking for trouble and diarrhoea, stop whinging when you get it.
Only a fool goes to Istanbul, It is decadent, wicked and sinful, But it's better than here, 'cos they sell their beer, Like bananas at fourpence a skinful!

Maybe that's why Turkey is being courted to join the European Union. OK, there's the odd terrorist atrocity in the hallowed union but generally all is quiet. A bit dull maybe. Imagine how much more interesting it would be if the public got to kick the shit out of the army every now and then? Hell, if you timed it right, you might even get to stamp on the head of a royal as he tries to get out of his tank.

Turkey has a long history of military coups. Oddly unlike most countries where this occurs it is usually followed by a quick return to (semi) democratic rule. Turkey,s military, in the past, has intervened when it felt there was a dictatorship. Because of the changes Erdogan has been making they probably felt that was happening again. Because of the replacement of the top senior generals with Erdogan sympathisers the coup seems to have started further down the pay scale but there has been a lot of muttering about the suppression of opposition going on for a while

This coup seems a bit half hearted, not something youd associate with a Turkish coup. Smells a bit like a power grab by Erdogan.

I think there is a fair chance Erdogan has been given an opportunity to gain even more power and he'll grab it with both hands ......... not good news at all.

I think it was a set up to create an islamist state and flush out the opposition to him he is a shite to say the least. No good will come of this at all, and to think the EU was courting this country to join the EU shows how useless they are in their judgement doesnt it?

reading the Times this morning about what is going on there, very concerning. This is one of those moments in history when things could go very wrong
