Wouldn't it be a lot easier to drill a hole in the bottom plating, so the water can run out the natural way My brain (or what's left of it) may have suffered from my visit to the clinic, so you better take my advise with a huge bag of salt. Peter.

I have estimated the approximate date when electric will become a valid option for canal boats. So it will be a fairly easy job because the Perkins P4 will be removed and sold to a Diesel 'fusiast to be replaced with a lovely silky smooth leccy unit and some sensibly priced salt water batteries.

I was reading up about those salt water batteries ..... very interesting ..... but they are just so enormous

I'll have a leaky turbocharged BMC running on reclaimed veggie oil refined at home - you will get the short straw 🙈🍻👍

Did a bit of reading this morning and checked the bilge pump. It's an Attwood Sahara S500. I've downloaded the manual and they suggest mounting it in the bilge rather than letting it sit around unattached. So when I get the opportunity, I'm going to clean up the bilge properly and, as the manual suggests, silicone glue a piece of wood to the bilge and mount the pump on that. Part of the problem is the outlet pipe is lifting the pump up so it's not getting a good contact with the water in the bilge. And also get a jubilee clip to fit the pump outlet pipe properly as it's currently just fit over the outlet and I don't think it has a particularly airtight fitting as I noticed some water coming out between the pump and the outlet pipe. I think that might sort it but we will see. And get the stern gland repacked too. www.attwoodmarine.com/store/product/Sahara-S500-500-GPH--12-Volt

They will get smaller. Like computers did. I think there might be a limit to how small those salt water batteries can get. But they do look interesting.

Ah, that's an idea if it's going to be easier! I'll try that. Cheers

My bilge is full of old oil from leaks. It protects the steel from rusting. I think you would probably have to have a little lie down after viewing my engine bay as it might be all a little shocking. It works gets the boat where I want it to go etc so not all bad. With a10ft cruiser stern, I have little chance of keeping the bilge dry. As MM says, a little oil works wonders preventing rust, and a regular check with a bit of pumping keeps the boat afloat. In 30 years, I've never got round to fitting the blige pump permanently. Just crocodile clips and a hose over the side.

They will get smaller. Like computers did. When God was a lad and I was a callow apprentice I can remember making the frames for LEO Computers which were made from box section steel 1"x 1" and 3"x 2". They filled a room and here we are today when my phone has more computing power than one of those Leviathans. Phil
