Based on the female, I would guess Tufted ... but thanks for the lovely photos.
We have seen scaup down that way occasionally, especially on the lakes at Batchworth/Rickmansworth.
The males are quite similar when detail isn't clear.

Just checked the book, and they are a 'confusion' species, so I would suggest we'll have to defer to the eye witnesses verdict Keep the photos coming jenlyn. Rog

Notwithstanding the tuft that is visible on the photo, the subject bird lacks the green gloss on it's head that is a feature of the Scaup. And with regard to the warden, we don't know how qualified he is, a mate of mine landed a job with the Broads Authority working as a warden in a Information centre at Ranworth Broad and on his own admission he knew bugger all about any birds. He landed the job off the back of the fact he had skippered an electric trip boat.... Lady of Ranworth. Phil

It also has black plumage on the top of its back and the distinctive pure white "flag" on the side which is a way of recognising male tufted ducks even if you can't make out the tuft.
I really like these ducks. If I had a big house and a pond or lake I would acquire as many as possible of them and import them.
We just have coots round here which are too aggressive. I nearly got attacked by a coot yesterday which has nested under the pontoon by my boats. Bad birds and they chase away all the others .

that is a brilliant photo of a heron ..... I always find them almost as hard as kingfishers to photograph .... it seems everytime I pick up the camera and point it in their direction ...... they bugger off

Its a Herring The last picture has a barge in it with mast. Looks on the face of it to be a dutch sailing barge but zooming in it looks like some strange modern copy. Would be interesting to see a closer pic as its quite an unusual looking boat Eta it looks like the offside moorings between Cosgrove lock and the iron aqueduct. An area full of canal history. At one stage the canal dropped down via locks to the level of the river Ouse and came back up more locks. Amazing to think of the changes which took place. Half a dozen locks and almost nothing left.

That's one of our all time favourite moorings, on the offside at Great Linford.
We also love the Nags Head, food and beer.
More terrific photos, thanks.
