Here is a short video with a pretty young girl explaining what sort of comforts they have in their wheelhouse, too bad she only told her story in Dutch. There's a small kitchen and a lounge area, a computer desk, and a very well equipped steering-station where you can see all the screens that show you permanently what the cameras see, a computermap of the harbour and the water around the ship, which is adjustable for the distances
As one of our members is always very worried about limited forward visibility, here's a photo that shows that there are ways to help the helmsman seeing what's in front : Peter.

Thats just taken me back years to when I lived and worked in Heerlen, I really liked the Dutch but the job sucked in a big way [ I worked with various nations and some could be challenging] so requested a posting from AFCENT When I joined the NATO jan '67 during the cold war, I was based for the first 6 months in Weert, which is in Limburg too, as is Heerlen, in these days AFCENT had their headquarters at Brunssum, don't know if they still exist and if so, where they are now. The NATO have been giving back several of their bases to the Germans, we had a reunion a couple of years ago (maybe even 10 years, I can't keep up with the speed of time) at the base where I'd spend most of my time in Germany, a couple of months before the Germans were allowed to move in again. Peter.

There's no need for those things Tony, just a flashing light on the wheelhouse-roof to warn the passing planes There are often oxygen mask onboard in case there's dangerous bulk cargo being loaded or emptied, which isn't always a healthy affair, some stuff gives off gasses when it gets wet, friends of mine lost a child because of that, this happened about 45 years ago, and at the time rules were not as strict as they are nowadays, and the bargees weren't as informed about these dangers either, and of course no internet where one can find informations about the dangers of certain cargo's. Peter.

We have a cooker and a fridge and a sauna at the bus garage. In that case there's no need for you to find yourself a job (possibly as an oil-changer) on one of this kind of barges Peter.

Im not sure that walking up and down all those steps would suit me .... It would certainly keep you in shape Patty. If you really think that it's too much for you, the wheelhouse can be lowered reasonably quick to let you down, and pick you up later, all the crew-members are in permanent contact with the bridge, so it wouldn't be difficult to ask them to come down again, to safe you from a huge clime . Peter.

"The NATO have been giving back several of their bases to the Germans" (Bargemast) Sorry Ross, I know that I'm surely not the brightest spark on earth, but I really can't make up what you mean quoting what I wrote earlier. If you don't mind, could you please add some explaining so that even I can understand it. Thanks, Peter.

You said: "The NATO have been giving back several of their bases to the Germans"
I don't know what needs explaining. I think it's a bad idea to let Germany gradually pick up power and a military force again, obviously two world wars haven't taught us they can't be trusted.

That sounds like a good explanation ( ), and now I understand why you were quoting me under what Patty said too, oh no, not really, or to say it better I don't understand your way of thinking at all, that's not your fault of course, but more likely to me being a tee-total 3 hours ago patty said: I'm not sure that all those goosesteps would suit me ....I won't bother asking for more explanation, as we're not on the same planet by the looks of it, is this way of thinking due to driving a bus on icy roads ? (No need to answer). Peter.
