Funnily enough, flying is quite similar. There is no limit to how bad weather can be. So one gathers all available information and then makes a decision. Which is exactly what I have done here. Hardly anything special about it!

Just been watching a video on a fb tug site from a drone over the river Hull
They have been sliding the Arctic Corsair slightly backwards and forwards to make sure everything is clear for towing to the docks tomorrow.
tugs "Lashette" "Shovette" "Gillian Knight" and the crane barge "Jade Lift"
first time she has moved for 20 years

given the tide heights and the recent rain ..... nobody should have been considering it unless on something with a lot more power and maneuverability than either a sewer tube or a canal yoghurt pot ...... and if that puts anyones nose out of joint .... tough

It transpires that Chris was due to go out today, but cancelled on the advice of the lockie. What's the river like at Leeds? Seems pretty low. Coming out of river lock there was perhaps 1/2 mph flow max. Electronic level indicator not working, board at foot of lock a few inches into the green.

Anyway if you've got to wait for the tide, that's more time in Leeds.

Anyway if you've got to wait for the tide, that's more time in Leeds. Yes it’s not a problem, the only complication is working out where to leave Jeff and the boat safely for 5 days Friday - Tuesday. With reasonable access for stuff to do for Jeff (ie not in the middle of nowhere with no transport). But I think we can still make either boroughbridge or Ripon canal if we get a move on.

There must be quite a lot of water in the rivers up that way anyway at the moment? There is, but it is reducing. Still 2 or 3 days to go to our intended transit. My mate Chris is a couple of days ahead of us, I’ll give him a ring and see how he is getting on. good luck...

But on to Plan C now which will see Jeff and the boat staying in Selby whilst I go to ABZ, so our transit will now be next tuesday when the tides are pretty neap.

Selby basin is OK, its a reasonably short walk to the town centre from the basin, passing the now redundant rail station on your left. Its overlooked by flats so not a particularly 'isolated' location. But we quite enjoyed our times stuck there and met some nice people. I rember leanding my hose to a young guy on a cruiser so he could wash his grp boat. Weeks later we passed him at Woodlesford and he called out to us and waved.

Well it’s just that a) Jeff doesn’t want to be left on a river navigation and b) Selby looks a better bet than Ripon. Otherwise it doesn’t really make any difference if I have my 4 days away before or after we go onto the Ouse. What I now have to find out is whether big spring tides make re-entry into Selby from the river on ebb, significantly harder, or not. Because it looks like we will be returning on the next spring phase. I’ll phone the lockie tomorrow.

Oh, why do you say “redundant” rail station? There does seem too be an active station in Selby - has it moved / been rebuilt? Also does anyone know if there are 7 or 14 day mooring slots in the basin area?

There is also the remnants of the original as you walk up to Selby town centre on the side of the Ouse. We exceeded the mooring time limit in the basin on the basis we were planning to go out onto the Ouse. You could perhaps find a spot before the swing bridge with no time restrictions, other than 14 days of course.

What I now have to find out is whether big spring tides make re-entry into Selby from the river on ebb, significantly harder, or not. Because it looks like we will be returning on the next spring phase. I’ll phone the lockie tomorrow. if you follow the normal pattern of leaving Naburn it can be ...... Naburn only operates to a certain time pattern around the tides It might be your ideal time to leave is outside of those hours. This was the case when I left Naburn in Sabina H. I needed to leave on the last of the ebb in order to go through Selby at the top of the tide. (I didn't fancy rounding up, stemming the tide until the bridges opened (the road and rail bridge synchronise their opening) and then dropping down stern first (yes I will accept the name wimp) what I did was drop down through the lock on the last available time the afternoon before. There is a pontoon mooring just below the lock. Peterboat joined me there and we left just after first light the next morning at low water. If you can time your arrival to coincide with the top of the tide then entry is easy ...... on the ebb on a big tide .... well !!! there are some interesting videos around
