We thought the Tunnel system was a right mess at the Folkestone end - all automatic, and no-one to tell you it is! No help from anywhere, apart from a lady in the office where the 'shopping centre' is, when she finally got off the phone. Cones all over the place and difficult to know exactly where it is you're supposed to be going! Piss-poorly organised. No better the French side. All in a "couldn't care less just give us your money" attitude.

It is quite slick but only if you are very used to it we are now, but yes very impersonal. As for seeing where you are supposed to be - yes and it was bloody worse this morning as the whole place was shrouded in fog making it even more difficult to see which where the height restricted lanes and which were for high vehicles like us. And don't get me started on those bloody touch screen terminals for entering your booking number - I've never had one work properly yet. They used to use ANPR as you drew up and they used your reg. to process your booking and print your lane 'hanger' - but they stopped this a few years back, I guess because people often turn up in a different vehicle to the one they booked with originally.

We bought a return ticket as it was cheaper than a single. Did they miss us?

Martin, we have used the ANPR system as recently as late April on our way out to France via the tunnel. Never had a problem with it. Roger

Roger What I was meaning was years ago when we used it I seem to recall the ANPR system used to recognise your plate and all you did was confirm your name and booking reference with no need to actually enter your booking ref. Number on the touch screen. Now the system says its retrieving your booking and you then you have to physically enter your booking ref. On the touch screen to confirm. you can do it by inserting the card you made the booking with of course but that only works if the card hasn't changed for any reason such as it has expired or been lost and replaced. My recollection may be faulty though and may relate to one of the ferrie co's.
