The Wigan Flight Crew. O M G Well to be fair I think the volockies on the trent are in a different league (ie much more competent and nicer) than the WFC. Mostly - apart from a certain tosser at Sawley.

I checked the stoppages. No the NJ canal is open, but levels are reduced a bit and there is once daily passage through the locks From the 12th of April access through Whitley Lock will be possible twice daily at 10am and 3pm. Boaters wishing to book passage through Whitley Lock will need to give 48 hours notice by calling 0303 040 4040, Mon-Fri between 9am-5pm.
Wasn't it said once that lockies won't let single handers out onto tidal waters? Or was that just Goole?

I haven’t hear that before, so wouldn’t like to call it either way. Once you are on the tidal river, I don’t really see where a second person would be helpful, it is just the issue with holding a narrowboat on lines fore and aft in the locks. An issue which is not insurmountable. I believe that below Keadby, the ABP rule is that you need 2 crew minimum, but that shouldn’t affect coming off at Keadby. Or is it ABP rules below Gainsborough? Can’t remember. We’ll need to wait for TD to wake up.

Goole Docks in normal times will allow single handers in, but not out. At the moment though with the breech, no leisure boats are allowed in or out, in their words to conserve water. Hopefully things will change soon. The other tidal locks run by CRT have no problem with single handers.

But in terms of getting to the north east, isn’t the stoppage on the A&C problematic for that route? Want to head over the Pennines so I think the area I want to explore will be free from stoppages. I am sitting on the Chesterfield, and find the messages from CRT to be somewhat mixed. The stoppages map shows red on the Aire and Calder west from Goole, but the locks from New Junction to Leeds are (or will be 12 th April) available if booked. I assume this is due to low water (a breach) , it may be navigable for narrowboats, but not large commercial barges, I'm not sure. I think there were advisories about mooring, as in 'not mooring', on New Junction but currently, I am not sure! Further west, the L&L also had stoppages, but now seems to be open for navigation , with advisories! I did the Trent from Keadby to West Stockwith, best to have the Trent Boating Association booklets / maps (3) as there are some bridges and shoals to be negotiated. I bought mine from Keadby lockeeper. Lockeepers listen on VHF, and also mobile phones. Ideally one wants to 'arrive' at slack. I found it difficult to decide if it was slack, which probably means it was! I just opened the throttle as advised by the lockeeper who was on the parapet, and gunned it in, stopping when inside the lock was a bit tricky, as in 'bump'. There are some posts on 't'other side, of 2019 passages. Tony Dunkley is the man to ask, once you have your plan. Work tidal passages from HW Hull. Goole Docks is Associated British Ports, and they require two on board, for safety reasons. Big ship movements. Ask cygnus, who is our man on the ground (literaly)

Well, CRT are promising updates on Tues and Weds about other South/North links but not expecting good news.
What horrors await me if I head north on the Trent instead? My knowledge/maps/guidebooks are currently in the realm of 'there be dragons there' so all comments welcome.
From the replies you've had so far, most of what you'll need to know has been pretty well covered already, . . but I would add that you really shouldn't be seeing the route North via the Trent as some kind of ghastly alternative to getting there via C&RT's ill-maintained muddy overgrown ditches and disintegrating locks. A properly equipped boat with a reliable engine installation that's capable of sustained running at full power is the key to safe and enjoyable river boating, . . mob-handed or single-handed, . . along with a well prepared skipper who's done the necessary 'homework' carefully and in advance of their first ever river or tidal passage If you are boating 'all hands one', and taking on river passages that can run into several hours with nowhere to stop, even for a few minutes, a bag of sandwiches, a thermos flask, or a crate of ale, and a bucket to piss in, all go towards making the trip a lot more agreeable. If you do go down the Trent to Keadby, put a post up on here when you've got as far as Nottingham, and I'll work out your best departure times from Cromwell, Dunham, Torksey, Stockwith, or Gainsborough for the easiest entry into the canal side-lock at Keadby.

Unlikely to make any decision on route before I set off on the 1st May.
Update on the T & M stoppage...
'Starting tomorrow, our contractors will be onsite between Bridge 200, Soot Hill and Bridge 201 on the Trent & Mersey Canal to undertake works that will help us to explore ways in which we can safely allow boat movement through the affected area without destabilising the embankment, slipped material within the canal or the above gas main.
A further update will be provided by Tuesday 20 April.'
So 3 months to decide whether they can come up with a plan! UNACCEPTABLE!

It truly is beyond a joke - 3 months sitting with their thumbs up their bums to only just begin to think about doing something. 2 men in waders with shovels and another 2 on the towpath with wheel barrows could have a through route in a couple of decent days. Christ, even with my back problem, I'd make a good fist of it.
*cue Foxy to tell me to get my boat there and do it 'militant styl'e and to hell with any consequences for my business license et all*
