I have just managed to fuck up my fridge whilst trying to chip the ice out of the freezer box. I have punctured something vital and it has spat all of it's gas out at me. What a dickhead..
Anyway..
Can anyone recommend somewhere to buy a new fridge that is both cheap and will deliver.
Cheers.

It may well be possible to have it repaired and re_gassed. Phil

It was on it's way anyway I think. It has been flashing a red light at me which according to the manual means 'compressor error' for months now, and keeps getting very iced up. Why are 12v fridges so expensive compared to 240? Just had a look on Midland Chandlers site and they are all stupid money

After looking around at 12v fridge prices I think my question has now changed to.. What size inverter will I need to run a 240v fridge?

After looking around at 12v fridge prices I think my question has now changed to.. What size inverter will I need to run a 240v fridge? For an undercounter fridge would have thought at least 1000W continuous rating is needed, 1500W+ is ideal, as fridges have a big big startup surge. For a fridge without electronic displays/controls, just a simple dial, an MSW inverter (non 'pure sine' inverter) should do OK, though the fridge will be less efficient and more noisy. I'd go pure sine inverter though unless you're really brassic, there's also the likes of Victron which weren't as eyewateringly expensive as I though they'd be. A trawl of Amazon reviews might help, best go for a UK supplier that specialises in that sort of thing. Probably best avoid the very cheapest 'barrel scrapings' off the likes of Ebay.

Not sure the compressor would be too happy long-term on a quasi-sine even on a simple fridge.

Looks very good for the price, Pete.

I believe this Friday is freaky at Midland chandlers so 20 % off. Still pricey but a bit less than normal.

Am sure there's info on the web about running fridges off MSW, maybe you could do some research and let us know what you think. I haven't got time myself to give a long explanation, just a quick summary. www.google.co.uk/search?q=fridge+msw+inverter

Cheers, it looks like 240v fridge + inverter is cheaper than just a 12v fridge, with the added bonus that I will then have an inverter which I'm sure will come in handy for other stuff.

Loads of anecdotal evidence both sides. When you can pick up a psw like your link above for sub £200 I don't see any point in risking it.

Loads of anecdotal evidence both sides. When you can pick up a psw like your link above for sub £200 I don't see any point in risking it. I expect the vast majority of problems with MSW will be down to insufficent surge capability or electronic controls, both of which I covered. As always good ventilation is important for efficiency, especially off-grid. OTOH, an el cheapo MSW is £50, I'd put the chance of it working at 90%+, so £5 at risk. Trouble is from my PoV, without some supporting information, it comes across as nit picking, one of the things that turn me off CWDF. And you seem to be quite skilled at it. Just from a cursory look: I've been running my fridge off a MSW inverter for over two years. My system is rather small and I found the fridge to be one of the best "loads" to put on it. What could I use it for during daytime hours??? Tried a few different things... 2 foot box fan running for 9hrs ran the batteries down so low, it took 4 days to bring them up to full charge.
I've been running a chest fridge on a 2000W HF MSW inverter for three years with no problem. It is under UNO control and it is the only thing on the inverter. Fans are disconnected abd it draws 123A at startup on 12V.
I've been running chest freezers off my 1400va 24v APC UPS which is MSW without problem. It will start the small one (75w) and the medium sized one (270w) OK. It can actually start both together - just - but won't start one whilst running the other. It won't start the big freezer (375w).
I've just tried running one of the freezers through a wattmeter:-
the power reading was about the same for both grid and MSW - actually slightly higher for grid power, but then the grid voltage is a bit high here - I've never seen it below 252volts. So in theory the freezer shouldn't be any hotter on MSW.www.fieldlines.com/index.php?topic=147950.0
