I imagine like surfing, it is standard practice to avoid losing the board and drowning. Surfing on salty water is completely different to paddling a board around a small river. In the former the board could well help you get to land in the event of fatigue but in the latter the land is probably only a few metres away and having the board attached to your body will be a horrible nightmare in the event that the water is moving fast. I haven't looked at it in detail but would assume that the board would detach from the human fairly easily. Maybe it wouldn't, or perhaps due to the cost of the board people feel the need to secure it well to avoid loss. It could just be the darwin thing in action but it does seem incredibly thick to wire yourself to the board if you arrr going anywhere remotely risky. upon looking into it,it seems a quick release strap is used on rivers. But quick release is the key, not quite the Velcro strap on surf boards

Dunno why, given the weather that day and all the rain, it went ahead... the guy who died trying to save others is well known around here.

I'm guessing it was the someone from the company who let them go out. I saw that and I suppose someone has to be blamed but part of me thinks why don't individuals make that call with regards their own safety? During daughters hen party they booked a white water rafting experience for all of us.... I looked at the water and thought no way..I don't swim well enough and it was pretty grim weather..prospective mother in law and her other daughter in law also made that decision. Anyway the experience nearly came to grief and daughter returned pretty shook up.

I would have thought there would be a disclaimer of some sort whereby individual safety would be the responsibility of individuals.
Like signing something saying "if you break your legs don't come running to me to complain" or whatever.
Seems very odd that the company, assuming the arrested person is part of the company, is so exposed. Who would run a business like that in the first place ?

You would also think that a company “professionals” would have a duty of care to its paying customers. If they are novices they can’t be expected to have the experience to know if it’s safe or not.

It could be that with the loss of revenue that many of these small firms have experienced during the last couple of years, H and S issues have become a bit lax
