Ross is a bit slow out of the gate on this, the report is at least a week old. It will be interesting to see if it goes anywhere but it's the sort of story that will only be followed in The Daily Tory (and Fux News). I didn't post it as 'News', but rather as a moral dilemma, as this sort of thing was being talked about........ as the patient clearly now hates himself for being a 'transsexual' that implies he hates transsexuals and thus should report himself to the Police for his Hate Crime. Of course. Now it all makes perfect sense.

I've skimmed many of the postings on this thread but DID take a look at Nick's initial (and follow up) comments over on the other side. To be fair, I'm inclined to agree with his approach to SOME of the v lockies... this year they've been doing my nut in - especially the nice/well meaning old duffers who really aren't quick enough to deal with problems (they cause by not spotting paddles they've left up etc) on Hurleston, Chester and Grindly thus far. It's much easier to Single hand than it is to be "assisted" by a time wasting (but admittedly well meaning) old duffer who's bored and wants to play on locks AND try to assert some authority in their lives which they appear to be lacking due to perhaps too early retirment (or being pussy whipped) at home - I HATE that phrase but it's suitable shorthand. and all this "oh - you're single handing, please stay on your boat at all times and I'll work you through" rubbish really does grate when I can have Ellis up and out in the tame it takes them to walk around the lock cause they can't step over the gates. Like Nick does say HE wants the fun of working locks that WE pay for to have... Why not just say to the volunteer lock-keepers, if they start interfering: "Sod off, or I will molest you!" It's the only language they understand.

Like Nick does say HE wants the fun of working locks that WE pay for to have... We’ve decided just to pre-empt any shenanigans by saying “we prefer to work the locks ourselves, thank you”. So far, mostly an OK reaction. But of course it is more difficult when you arrive at a lock and they are standing there with the gate open etc. I think those that would be no problem assisting, are quite happy when you say you want to DIY, whereas those who want to boss one around and give “advice” are the ones who will sulk if you say you want to DIY. I think we are perhaps becoming a bit over sensitive but it is stupid little things that really annoy me, for example we approached bottom of Hillmorton (2 parallel sets of narrow locks) to go up, a boat was just coming out of the rhs lock (opposite direction) and the other lock was full. Nevertheless the volockie felt it necessary to gesticulate that we should approach the lock that was just being vacated. Did he think we were completely stupid or what? It was just him “Mansplaining”, stating the bleedin’ obvious, and exerting his authority. I nearly decided to go to the other lock and drain it, but I suppose that would be wasting water.

Of course I think we've all had 'volunteer lockie' experiences that were annoying, irritating or downright bad ... just it's a lot more fun winding Telemachus up a bit Rog

I genuinely so think that Telemachus has a point here. It's serious. There is a concerted effort at dumbing down. It's not very nice to watch and if one is in the thick of it then it can be really quite disturbing. Fortunately for Nick he has a wonderful husband and other things to do plus he is probably about 70 ? So it does not really fuck up the future badly. I do feel sorry for younger people who would like to have a personality in this world. It's going to be difficult. Treating everyone like dumb idiots only leads to one outcome and it is a negative outcome. Nice day though and sunny. Global warning is not all bad.

You might think you have problems.
I once read an account of a transit of the Panama canal. There you are required to have (and pay for) an approved crew of four on one's boat for reasons of health and safety, as well as a 'qualified' pilot (and they all want to poo in your toilet which cannot be a sea-toilet)
So, having surmounted all the red tape, a boat set off with said crew in tow. It was a east-west transit. At the western end there is apparently a marina directly to starboard which most folks use. The skipper was directed to follow a course of about 45 degrees to the course he wanted to follow but felt he was obliged to follow the pilot's directions.
It turned out there was a reef not marked on the chart, and when the boat hit it the hired crew along with the pilot abandoned ship, as did the cat (but they later found it).
It later transpired the pilot knew the reef was there but wanted to get to shore more quickly in order to catch the last bus home. He was never seen again. The boat was recovered but spent months ashore while extensive repairs to the hull were carried out.
So sometimes telling an 'expert' to get stuffed is the only way.

No volockies down the Nene or on the Middle Level. There was Maureen at Marmont Priory, who I believe has now stopped after being threatened by some boaters

It wouldn't have been, . . the Hilmorton pound needs every drop of water it can get at the moment to run round the stop-lock at Sutton's and start getting the level in the Coventry and the Moira (Ashby) back up. Despite useless Parry's useless water management team - "doing all they [could] to manage this situation" - since last Monday, C&RT wasn't aware that it was possible to run water round the stop-lock at Sutton's until I called them yesterday and asked them if they were already doing it, . . . and if not, . . why not ? They started running water from the Hilmorton pound shortly after I called them yesterday : - < canalrivertrust.org.uk/notices/22670-atherstone-lock-1-to-coventry-basin-coventry-canal >

I suspect most of us on the canal system actually enjoy boating ... that's why we've spent the money on a boat and licence etc.
Doing the locks is an enjoyable, occasionally social activity and a big part of canal boating, and why we bought our own.
I don't mind occasional assistance but am quite happy without it.
I find it quite irritating that we can no longer do the Foxton flight without a volunteer, despite having done them many times, in winter with no one around.
But very many of the volunteers are willing, pleasant and helpful ... only ever met one really bossy type.

It's a status thing. I only have to look at someone and they instantly know that I am in charge. Not everyone has this so there are times when it gets complicated. I agree it would be good to see kris posting.
