Continuing the story of our latest boating along the Llangollen Canal. Part 3 to be posted tomorrow around 3pm UK-time
Whitchurch to Ellesmere and Chirk
Tuesday sees us winching up three lift bridges and a lock-free run all the way to Ellesmere, passing through ’Shropshire’s Lake District’ of wooded meres. We stopped at Blackwater Marina in Ellesmere for diesel and electricity for the vacuum cleaner as relations of mine were coming for a ride on the boat the next day. Wednesday morning I take a stroll round Ellesmere by myself; we transport said relations from Ellesmere to the Jack Mytton pub near the New Marton locks; and we encounter a Thunderboater and live to tell the tale!
On clicking the link and seeing all the photos appear at once, I would urge you to click on the first photo to enlarge it, and click the little i (information) sign top right for the text I have added to appear. Then you may click the forwards arrow to continue to the next photo, or use your keyboard arrow buttons.
(Edit March 2018 - link to photos now gone, as photos from my Google Photos account have been deleted by me. Time to move on and have a look at our pics from Summer 2017 'Witchy & Foxy Up North')

Lovely photos, and again they brought back memories of out time there. Does the old boy still hang around at Quoisely lock selling eggs?

We hired in February about 4 years ago as a treat for our silver wedding, blue skies and sunshine, no crowds or queues. It was great. It would have taken a good few weeks to go there and back from the top of the hill on our own boat.

Some photos of the gentleman on pages 3,4 and 5 here. www.kearvaigpipeclub.co.uk/KPCNL16.pdfHe generally sits at Quoisely lock all day, selling a small selection of groceries which I believe he obtains from his brother's smallholding. His name is Ken Southern. He also helps single handers with the lock. He appears rather tramp-like in appearance but he is very friendly and chatty. I mentioned to him that it was my twin boys' birthday when we passed through last year, and when Sam got back on the boat he said "Aw, that was really sad". So I said "What was sad?" and he told me Ken had said to him "Happy birthday son!. Cough cough, splutter. I've not got too many birthdays left now!"

Thanks Foxy. Your choice of photos, to take, shows that I'll never make a photographer as long as I've got a hole in my. ..

"Some photos of the gentleman on pages 3,4 and 5 here. www.kearvaigpipeclub.co.uk/KPCNL16.pdf" I've bookmarked that, very interesting! When I was a teenager I tried a pipe and thought it was very quaint. I've often fancied standing at the back of our boat of an evening puffing away whilst admiring the landscape, wondering what the ancient oak trees have witnessed, and of the fate of the elves and dwarves and hobbits...

What have you put in your pipe? Pass it round....
