This item. Provides electric power to onboard services while the main engine is running.. Although that looks more like a pump of some sort. Could be a 3 phase generator? Got to be a water pump Andrew, look along the pipe and there is a lever valve in it ........ I doubt there is much likelihood of it being a watercooled alternator

another thought .... could it have a hydraulic pump on the little engine originally a drive for a pot hauler ?

Speaking of Gardners this is rather nice www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gardner-1L2-LAB-Diesel-Stationary-Engine-/224311785379I always felt that one of these coupled to a decent 12/24v alternator could have some positive outcomes. Might be an interesting way of converting diesel into charge in your lithium bank. Could fit an inline permanent magnet alternator for low speed operation.

when I bought Sabina, she had a single cylinder Lister driving a compressor (for the airstart bottle for the Glennifer) and a 12v alternator. Unbelivably after many years of being regularly submerged in the Thames, we cleaned out the mud and water from the crankcase, poured parafin in the injector hole and poked bits of wire through the injector itself (one of those you can take apart) Oil in the sump and two of us swinging on a scaff pole to get it turning over. a bit of diesel in a tin can and away it went about 120 rpm top revs !!! date on the brass plate was 1921 and rated at three HP ..... stood over 4 foot high and reckon the flywheel weighed best part of half a ton. Was loth to abandon it but there was too much else on my plate to take that on as well ...... it would have been great 25 years down the line though

I always fancied something like that for the charging but not really enough room on little Dulcinea for that sort of item.
She does have a very nice and perfectly formed engine room but no space for a 3rd diesel unit in there.

I don’t think I’d be buying that one, but yes one of these spinning a nice permanent magnet alternator would be good. I had a little air cooled lister spinning one alternator it was my main electric generator for five winters: About £2.50 a week for electric in winter. I needed the space so it’s gone, but I do miss it as a back up. If you had one that heated water as well, I think it would be perfect.

Yes I've got a miniature Kubota water cooled 12v generator but not got round to installing it. Running that via a calorifier would be very interesting. These sorts of projects usually take place in my head though. It's rather more difficult to make them into real life things.

About time you fitted it,especially now you’ve got a boat you really like.

It's on one of the other boats so idea is to get boats together at some point after stoppages and lift it across. I can't do any lifting myself so need to use one of the cranes.
If I could build it into Dulcinea it would be amazing.
Also needs the high pressure pump refurbing but it's all doable and I have had it running a few years ago it is a more or less unused item.

I do think it’s the best solution to living off grid all year this far north on the planets surface. If you can get heat as well then brilliant. After helping yet another fit a useless wind turbine, I’m not even considering one. Tegs are still unproven and exspensive so running a small internal combustion engine is the only way. If you get heat, hot water and power what’s not to like?

got to agree with the vertical wind turbines, I know peterboat finds his gives him a bit of a charge, but I didn't.
After giving the supplier a lot of grief they finally replaced mine, however the replacement did not prove to be any better. Over the measured period (a few weeks) it actually consumed slightly more power than it supplied.
After having given them even more grief since and having pointed out that as a vessel on the historic register, I get a lot of questions and would they really like me telling everyone that their product is a heap of crap? (if you have a lever you need to use it) they pressed money in my hand .... not 100% but a goodly percentage. The alternator itself is quite a nice unit as is the three phase PWM rectifier/control module ...... all I need to do is work out a way to spin it faster by some other method.

I have to agree John, I’m trying to discourage another person from wasting his money on one. They must get lots of people complaining, because they are crap.
