The Canal & River Trust is a charity set up in 2012 to care for England and Wales' 200-year-old waterways, holding them in trust for the nation forever.

Is the CRT a charity? I think people know that Parry is a money grubber but fair point ! Do other charities get DEFRA funding? Not sure about Defra funding but lots of charities get funding from Government. Royal Opera House springs to mind.

"At the core of our charity are our charitable objects or purposes. The Trust's objects are set out in the Articles of Association. Our registration with the Charities Commission is No. 1146792."

I was being facetious.
It is a charity but I doubt people give money to it in the same way they would Oxfam (the starving Africans) or nspcc (The poor little children)
I can't really see "ooh those poor disadvantaged boaters with their own narrow boats and Harold shipman beards" would get much of an emotional response.

Crt is a public limited company with special discompensation to use trust in its name. It has some charitable aims. So to say it’s a charity is misleading.

There is that too. I just think it is a bit naff for CEO of charities dealing with people in really shit situations get paid a lot of money for it.
They often seem to have famous "patrons" but presumably they just want their names on display rather than actually doing something.

It’s a charity in the same way as the royal family is a charity.

There is that too. I just think it is a bit naff for CEO of charities dealing with people in really shit situations get paid a lot of money for it. But charities do wonderful work. When I lived in a house my water rates bill used to be £350 a year but they always enclosed a leaflet from some charity or other telling me that for £2 a month I could supply an entire African village with water.
