We've done all, or some part of the Grand Union, North Oxford, Coventry, Trent and Mersey, Staffs and Worcester, Shropshire Union, Macclesfield, Birmingham and Fazeley, and South Oxford canals since April this year. Our five recorded sightings were for coded locations on the Trent and Mersey and Macclesfield canals only. It doesn't inspire confidence in the process. I'll stick with recording contemporaneous notes, corroborated by receipts etc. in my daily log. I can prove my movements whether C&RT can or not. Rog CRT often only record sightings once every two weeks in the majority of areas, and that's dependent on how far the logger strays from his van, so their logs are pretty worthless really. It does give them patterns though for ccers, of distance travelled over a period of a year. Ccers are more likely to be logged because they cruise less mileage in a fortnight than a part timer or leisure boat. Their main logging is taken more seriously in problem areas. I'd advise anyone to keep their own logs, just as a back up.
