Well yes, a bunch of aging hippies complaining that their chosen lifestyle will no longer be as subsidised from the public purse as it used to be. That won’t garner much sympathy. Dry predictable response from a fully paid up member of the coffin dodgers club. 🙄 Dry and predictable but true.

To expand, I think a reasonable argument is that the canals are a benefit to many people who aren’t boaters and thus public funding is fair. That has merit. But to complain that a chosen hippie-esque lifestyle will suffer from reduced government funding, is not going to win votes.

Except in the world of real, government funding will increase, albeit through another department.

Looks like I made a smart move blackmailing CRT into taking their "free" Covid month back, which had pushed my renewal month from March into April.

We are a community of ‘liveaboard’ boaters, our boats are our homes. My boat , like many others, is not my home. Like many other boat owners, I have a mooring which costs me for facilities like water, sanitation disposal, rubbish disposal. I also pay council tax on my home for maintenance of footpaths, roads, street lighting refuse disosal and police and fire services. I also pay a charge for water supply, drainage and sewage disposal. Whilst out cruising, I pay a licence fee for facilities such as water, elsan disposal and rubbish disposal over and above my home usage. I also have a mooring which provides these facilities whilst on my boat but not cruising, a proportion of which goes to CaRT to help them maintain their property. If someone is continuously using the facilities, then it is not unreasonable to expect to pay an increased charge for the useage over and above that of a recreational user and also for the privilege of being able to keep their vessel on CaRT property without any additional rental. A continuous cruiser also expects to be able to use roads and footpaths in yowns and cities, to be able to call upon the services of police and fire services. Even with the proposed surcharges, they will still be getting a good deal comparatively.

But at the same time CRT are increasing the price they are also removing as many of the services the prices are apparently there to support. It's a win-win-win situation for CRT; reduce costs, increase revenue from boaters, deter the terrible people who cause all the problems in London...
Still, in fairness everything has become more expensive. There's no escaping it.

I think the increases are inevitable but the reduction in services is disgusting and an attack on livaboard boaters along with the surcharge on cc’ers. I’d hate to be a widebeam cc’er it’s bad enough being a widebeam. Although as we are a minority it’s unlikely that surcharge will get over turned but I get the feeling the cc’ing surcharge will be challenged.

Indeed. CRT's actions speak louder than words. I feel sorry for those with a boat just a wee bit over narrow beam. That must suck.

My London boat is 10ft6 wide on a mooring and my licence is going up more than a cc ing narrow boat. The cc ers are getting off lightly. Its the wide beans the CRT are really going for regardless of whether they have moorings or not.

I'll be gone like a long dog before the licence increases anyway as have found a new way to do things which does not involve having a boat in an inner city ditch full of weed, rubbish and dead cats.
The only way is up.

I will wait until CRT tell us in November, if they see lots of negative comments to the above it might go down or up! either way DWP might not pay the full license there are limitsThe DWP limits are way higher than CRT licence fees. My other half works for DWP changes are afoot and they arnt going to be good news, after all how can one look for work if one is a continues cruiser?
