People say it's cruel to keep dolphins in captivity but I saw one once at the Hastings Sea Life Centre and it had a great big smile on its face.

No you won't. I find the idea of eating something that lives in the Thames estuary a tad off-putting. Try Lyme Bay, any idiot could catch a mackerel or two there. I said I 'might' so your retort that I won't is incorrect because I did not say that I will.

So its only me who likes boats then.
Doesn't anyone else have an ideal boat in their minds eye?
Blue water sailing yot 25m x 5m?

My ideal boat would have an engine and all the gubbins associated with it mounted on a hydraulic platform that lifts everything out of a deep pit so I could service it without pretending to be a bat...

This is where having endless money can work.

So its only me who likes boats then. Doesn't anyone else have an ideal boat in their minds eye? Blue water sailing yot 25m x 5m? I just can’t post photos. But my dream boat would be something with junk sails that could cross oceans. Maybe a proha, Or a Thomas Colvin gazelle even a wharram cat. But I’d need the money to go with it.

There was a nice Junk rig yacht in 8mm ally I put on the interesting boats thread. Project boat. No shower in there. Nice item I reckon. I feel that in this day and age and with the money as mentioned in the OP by dogless one could simply go for electric if the intention was to conquer the oceans. And diesel. I don't understand the point of sailing. Maybe a couple of hundred yars ago but we are now in the 31st century. It seems a bit like not eating bacon because fridges have not yet been invented.

But I’d need the money to go with it. Tell us about why junk-rigged boats are cool. It’s a very simple rig to sail. As well as being reasonably easy and cheap to make yourself. The masts aren’t under tension so none of the exspensive stainless steel rigging to replace regularly. You don’t need to go and bye exspensive bits from a chandlery to maintain it. They are not amazing into the wind, but all in all a much better option for a shoe string cruiser. It’s a bit like flying a kite tied to a stick.

Have you ever crossed an ocean under sail?

I noticed on CWDF that there is a tug for sale for £195,000 ... looked horrible to me, but we all have different tastes.
I'm fairly happy with the boat I have.
If I upgraded to a brand new boat with money no object we'd still end up doing the things we do now on Paneke, so I'm quite content.
I suppose I wondered if there's any current advances in technology that people would love to try but money prevents it.
Must admit I'd like the cash for an all new electric boat, but that's not what I'd spend it on 😁

It’s a bit like flying a kite tied to a stick. also... Single-handed operations such as reefing are much easier compared to a Bermudan rig; a gybe is no more difficult or dangerous than a tack; sail repairs are potentially easier since the entire sail is composed of several individual panels. however... the mast has to be circular in cross section and, since it is unstayed, needs to be considerably stronger (and likely heavier and bulkier) than a more conventional arrangement. Also, and again because it is unstayed, it is essential that the mast is footed onto the keel. The junk sail requires a horizontal spar every 2-3 feet which increases complexity and weight aloft and, because of the inherent and increased risk of these spars breaking, more spare parts need to be carried. Overall, the sail is less efficient than a single 'sheet'.
