It seems there has been flooding on the lower Lea in hackney wick overnight. Small beer compared to the Trent, possibly a record breaker there but I suppose them there mard southern Lee dwellers have felt a drop of rain. Declare an emergency quick. Blame CRT! Muster the NBTA troops.

Muster the NBTA troops. It’s not as high as in the 2000 floods on the Trent. It’s the relentlessness of it this year. If there’s another storm within the next month/six weeks then be we will be right back where we are now within hours.

I expect my dinghy tied behind the inner city slum boat will have sunk.

I heard on the radio that it's close to the record, seems it didn't go over, last night. Have you got dry socks?

I like the way the River goes quiet as the fall on the weirs reduces.
River in charge is always good.
Keeps the paddle boarders away!
I dreamt of having to rescue a paddle boarder last night.

It's what rivers do ... every year to a greater or lesser extent.
Devastating for those involved but hardly a surprise.
One of the reasons we bought a house on a hill.

Rog I don't find it devastating at all. Really like it ! But yes if I had fallen into the trap of buying a house it would be at a sensible elevation. This is where a Boathouse is good. By elevating the accomodation above the water in such a way as to be able to accommodate the Boats under it the living space is freed from the encumbrance of flooding. The way to do it would be to also have mooring posts in line with the River and move the Boat out at strategic moments .

Yes Al ... I was meaning those whose homes and businesses are flooded once again. Impressed you choose to winter on a river ... so easy for things to go wrong. The strong winds have caused minor damage to our ridge tiles ... living on a hill makes you vulnerable to wind damage if not flooding 🤭 New bolted down 'maintenance-free' ridge to be fitted Monday and guttering cleaned out. Winters can be harsh. Rog

Rog Yes I understand that other people do exist and as it happens I am enormously helpful to others and never take any money for helping people. Maybe that is where I went wrong. The River is fine. I don't see it as a risk really. There are more rewards than I can shake a stick at. It really does it for me. In another life I would have a job as a flood monitoring field agent for the environment agency. I love it. No kidding I really love it. My first reaction if I see 'steady' or 'falling' is one of disappointment. Not because of the danger of falling levels but because I want it to go as high as possible for the experience.

I suppose leaving the boat unattended in such conditions (e.g. ten hours whilst working) would be an issue.
As you're largely on hand to monitor / adjust ropes etc. you are more in control.
I've seen several reports of boats caught up due to rising level etc.

I haven't touched my mooring lines for a month. It isn't all that difficult to keep the Boat safe. I could leave this one for two weeks and nothing bad would happen.
A lot of the problems arise from mooring in inappropriate locations and/or not taking precautions.
Obviously occasionally there can be random circumstances such as trees coming down and adding load to the Boat but if you moor in the right sort of place in terms of where the water is going these problems are less likely to arise.
I'd not want to be on the outside of a bend on a river during the flood season. This would be unwise for a number of different reasons.
