Butchers shop = shop operated by a butcher
Fishmongers shop = shop operated by a fishmonger
Greengrocers shop = shop operated by a greengrocer
Charity shop = shop operated by a charity
Farm shop = shop operated by a ...
I wouldn't have thought it was too complex a concept ... maybe if I'd written it in Latin ?

Last time I went to the Launderette in Bulkington I had a look around the two charity shops there and found some gorgeous antique willow pattern plates. It's difficult to be sure but I'd say they probably date from somewhere in between 1790 and 1830 and the best thing of all is that it says on the back that they are dishwasher safe.

A variant on the game "how much is this please?" in Poundland is to select a garment in a charity shop and ask "Have you got this in a larger size?" Rog But not all of us need a larger size!

You missed a golden opportunity there to explain that folk are more likely to ask for a smaller size due to starvation after 13 years of Tory rule, Jim.

I wouldn't have thought it was too complex a concept ... maybe if I'd written it in Latin ? Rog Thank you for illustrating the point so well. Well, fairly well anyway. You will notice that the first three in your list end in s. This is not because there are necessarily multiple of these types of people in the shop, it is because it is the possessive. The Butcherβs shop. Shop of the butcher. But look! No s after Charity or Farm. Thus not the shop of the charity or farm. In the same way that the hardware shop is not the shop operated by the hardware, it is the shop selling hardware.

A shop selling cake. At least they are honest and not a money laundering front for a drug dealer. Well unless you ask for hash cake of course.
