I looked up the origin of the expression "taking the piss" recently.
One theory was that is related to the fact that men sometimes get involuntary hard-ons when the bladder is full due to some sort of internal pressure reaction (common in the morning). So if you 'take the piss' you are therefore deflating the erection which can be seen symbolically as removing someone's virility. This would imply that you cannot in fact take the piss out of a woman !
I think its quite a likely origin of the phrase but not sure if anyone knows for sure.

This would imply that you cannot in fact take the piss out of a woman ! I think its quite a likely origin of the phrase but not sure if anyone knows for sure. I think it's likely along those lines. The man who wakes with an erection is said to be piss-proud but it's a 'false pride' because it comes from a full bladder and not from any sexual arousal. So to take the piss would be to puncture his false pride. Wikipedia has a possible canal related origin too... During the age of the working canals in Britain, urine would be brought up the canals to the wool mills in Northern England (particularly to Yorkshire), as urine was used in the process of fixing dye to wool. This was particularly the case when dyeing items blue with indigo or more traditionally with woad, before synthetic dyes were invented or made commercially available. Being in the business of transporting urine was much less lucrative than transporting wine, so when the boatmen were questioned what they were carrying they would lie and say "I'm taking wine" and the response would be "No, you're taking the piss" to express disbelief.

I thought it was related to the medieval tanning industry.
Urine was collected for the tannery.
I understood that the expression that someone was so poor 'they don't have a pot to piss in' also came from that period.
However with all expressions, there are conflicting explanations.

if the above is meant to be tongue in cheek, fair enough if it's not, I think you missed my wink & laugh at the bottom of my post - it certainly was not meant to cause offense to anyone I actually like & respect elderly people, more often than not they have wonderful tales to tell to anyone willing to take the time to listen. And being my Dad's main carer for the last 5 years of his life, I have first hand experience of the good and not so good that goes hand in hand when caring for the elderly, when it's a parent it's neither a hardship or burden. Betty - it was primarily tongue in cheek, I just wanted to reply with 'I was taking the piss'! There was a very minor serious point which was about looking after a middle aged woman dying from cancer, but the 'taking the piss' was want I wanted and a smiley wouldn't of helped achieve that. Sorry if I offended you. None taken - just didn't want you (or anyone else) thinking I was being even remotely serious

Next day we put some fat on the bird table for the birds and 5 magpies queued up on the fence to take turns.

I used to get a deer every now and then from the people that collected road kill and put it down on my beach. There were a bunch of old fence posts down there and all the posts near the carcass would have bald eagles sitting on them waiting to eat. The otter that lived in my lagoon didn't really like eagles, and it would sometimes try to chase them away, but the eagles just mocked her.

LOL That's what they did! The eagles would stand on the shore near the otter and they would just have a go at each other.
