Just seen the footage on the news ... didn't half hit it.
I thought it would be a glancing blow but no, almost midships.

Several thousand tonnes travelling slowly still has a lot of shove. Ship had radioed to say power was lost. There was no guard structure around the bridge stanchions. Lucky it was the middle of the night, not rush hour traffic.

my apologies if my attempt at humour seemed flippant in such a disastrous incident.

my apologies if my attempt at humour seemed flippant in such a disastrous incident. I have no problem with a bit of black humour.

It seems odd there wasn't some shallow water in the vicinity of the bridge.

Large ships are often piloted by a suitable craft in many tight areas. In and around harbours etc. Perhaps this practice should be extended to around critical infrastructure such as bridges, when there's not much room for error/ breakdown before a serious incident may occur.

It was taken off the berth and manoovered by two tugs but they left once it was on the navigation track.
Seems like a power failure then when it started working they put it in reverse and it lost steering. Like wot happens when one tries to stop a canal Boat the bow tends to drift and you lose control. Except the Ship was 100 thousand tonnes not 15..
The pilot aboard the vessel will have some explaining to do but if it lost power then not a lot one can do really.

It seems odd that there are 6 or 7 construction workers missing but vehicles were on the bridge when it disassembled itself. Presumably the vehicle occupants had enough time to leg it to safety or managed to get out of the vehicles once in the water.
