Anyway, back to the original post. I don't even know why gambling is legal. Heroin isn't legal, crack cocaine isn't legal, even the most addicted junkie can only get through £300 a day in smack or crack whereas a gambler can throw away a lifetime's savings in a day, and these gambling adverts are everywhere. The reason it is legal is because it offered the Government of the day the opportunity to collect tax from what was effectively the black market. As a nipper, one of my aunties lived in a house next door to a bookie, in one of 480 houses in the street. There were only 2 cars in that street, the bookies and a local councillor. I can recall my Dad giving me a 2 shilling piece wrapped up in paper to take to Peter, who operated in an old Anderson Shelter in his back garden. When betting shops were legalised, 10% of the stake was immediately creamed off in tax. I can't be arsed to work out how much that has increased to now, but it must be a significant increase. Betting shops then were pokey little corner premises with just enough room for a counter and a shelf for writing bets. They have now become full entertainment venues with multi screens, fruit machines to fill in the 1/2 hour between races, and refreshments available. I bet ( pun intended for the irony adverse) that there is still a healthy under the counter facility for betting. |

Isn't it odd that, despite 14 years of tory government (recently described as the worst government in British political history) that hardly a word of criticism whatsoever has been levelled at it on this highly influential forum, yet hardly a day has passed where something was found to slag off* Labour? Even now, when it transpires that four (at the latest count) Tory party members are under investigation for insider betting, we see nothing beyond a dismissive jeer that it isn't important, but a merely suspected (and dismissed) offence by a Labour party member generates page after page of reasons why she (you know who I'm talking about) should be pilloried at the very least... Still, at least we can look forward to criticism of the party in power for at least the next 8 years 🤣

I also find it surprising that 'number rackets' aren't more widespread...the way it works (or worked) in the American model is that the mafia offered significantly better payouts for any bet placed, with apparently no quibbling on winning tickets; the winning numbers were simply the same ones displayed in the official state lottery thus avoiding any possibility of accusations of the game being fixed. A very successful system, with the only drawback being that the profits went directly to organised crime, a fact that doesn't appear to have concerned anyone. I suppose it's one argument in favour of a national lottery with potentially immense wins.

Also it's funny to recall that the thing Corbyn was most vilified for in the gutter press was his stance on Palestinian freedom, and look where we are now... the assault on Gaza resulting in approximately 13 dead Palestinians for every Israeli killed in the October '23 attack, the Israeli government abhorred by most of the civilised world, a mass movement in Israel itself to end the violence and the leader of Israel's government increasingly looking like a crazed despot...to say nothing of the laughing stock that Britain's preferred elected government has become...hmm. |

I really can't see what all the fuss is about whether it's Labour or the Tories. If I knew what the winning numbers were going to be on tonight's EuroMillions lottery draw then I'd be down the Village Store buying a ticket with those exact numbers right now. It's a no-brainer.
