And so it begins, a month undercover in the paint dock, two boats one aim - to get the pair of them looking like new pins in 4 weeks! Boat 1. Northetn Star an aft cockpit Ormelite. She's not mine, but plenty of effort will be going into her cosmetically over the next few weeks so she will be intertwined with this thread, For neatness I'll keep the mechanical stuff on her separated out in the Never Ending Thread. Boat 2 Good old Fairlight, our Elysian 27 that keeps me busy! 1, Topside repaint to include non slip coating to gunwales. - Done 2, Cockpit - remove all fittings, strip manky old varnish, make good odd tatty areas, apply woodstain -halfway through! Sadolin and Le Tonki postponed until the spring as it's now too cold and damp to get a decent finish 3, running repairs to windscreen frames, sand and stain. Fingers crossed they will go another two years as the funds are not there to replace them at the moment - Done 4, strip cabin door of old varnish, stain cockpit side, varnish interior side - Done! 5, service fridge as the spiders have made up home in the gas burner, two weeks after it was last lit! On the plus side it needs removing to strip the varnish from its enclosure anyway. - Done. 6, drop canopy off for a couple of small repairs and some seam reinforcement to stop the odd drip we now suffer with. - awaiting the nod to collect it - pick it up Wednesday and refit -Done 7, refurbish hatch, it had a meeting with a lump hammer when the keys went wandering some years back, it's possibly the most hateful thing I have done in a long time - bastard keys were in my van all along I tarted it up well enough after that act of vandalism but it's high time I did a proper job on it - Done. Today went well, started off at dawn giving a bollocking to a pair of prats shooting from the lake behind us in our direction. Northern star was taken under a steady easy tow on an almost breathless day round to the floating paint dock. Cross straps and a crafty line from a ring in the middle of our transom gunwale made it a doddle to get her round. Big hit on both boats removing every fitting from the superstructures and cockpits ready for battle to commence. No pictures today but back down tomorrow to flat the paint with some scotchbrite so I will take some then 🚢⚓🍻👍😀

You do like working mate....😉 Definitely a busy winter ahead. I'm aiming to not do too much over the winter, although I have few inside jobs to do. I am currently making a large garden box to house our new freezer and I want to re-grout the shower, but other than that I would like the winter free of hassle.

It's our biannual slot in the paint shed, no cost so it's a good opportunity to do the jobs that are an arse ache out in the open. Next year should be my rest year (fingers crossed!!) The cabin door, hatch and locker tops are at work, got to have something to play with during my breaks I've striped one side of the door and made good the hatch. Pics after dinner 👍🍻

Pity Loafer is no longer posting because he had huge expertise in grouting, I was always in awe of his grouting knowledge. Phil

The sorry state of the door after 50 years (including the act of vandalism caused by a previous idiot Bss inspector) the varnish would originally have been excellent. Sadly a Muppet attacked it prior to our ownership. One side (the cockpit side exposed to the sun's UV) stripped with the hot air gun. The old varnish came off much easier than I anticipated. The cabin side is proving more tricky. The crap stuff Muppet used is a bastard to shift - melting and smearing rather than coming off in nice flakes. The original varnish can be seen, in reasonable nick with absolutely no sign of having been sanded to provide a key for the shit stuff that has been lashed on top of it I may try chemical stripping the top layer and then going back to the hot air gun if needed. Now for my act of vandalism. The damage was hidden by two bits of architrave. I've another picture of it in place on the works computer. It's now stripped, repaired and waiting for some hardwood dowel to arrive so I can plug the odd hole prior to staining. I'll put a pic of the hatch awaiting staining up tomorrow.

The hatch awaiting a little bit of finishing - there are some holes to plug with dowel and then staining to be done. God knows who made that stain that was on it - it was awful stuff to get shot of - what a shame that nice grain had been hidden away by the hateful stuff!

The door after going at it with the paint and varnish stripper, I had given it a wipe over with some meths just before I took the picture. Both sides are ready for having the odd hole filled, a new larger 150mm diameter hole in place of the gash abortion ready to fit a nice new round vent, a bit of sanding then out with the brushes.

If its downlights smear a dollop of this round the bezel www.toolstation.com/shop/p69243?table=noBang in place, a bit of tape will help overcome gravity while it cures. Wait for it to harden, any excess that ouzes out can be trimmed with a decent Stanley knife - wait till it's fully cured though, dibr be tempted to prod and poke the excess when wet as it makes an awful mess of just about anything it comes into contact with - including you're fingers! Lamps can still be changed but the bezel won't make a break for it ever again
