The thing is, you have never actually seen a Hudson owner in a grandad shirt and neckerchief. That is reserved for historical narrowboat operators especially President. Well actually I did see the 'captain' 🙄 of 'Brigand', complete in grandad shirt, but without neckerchief admittedly , being an arrogant twat, mooring overnight on the Montgomery canal entry 'waiting' moorings, thus causing inconvenience to people wanting to enter the locks, about a month and a half ago when I was there. He Looked 'up, down his nose' at me when I asked him to sound his (probably non working replica🙄) Klaxon horn mounted on this rear hatch! 👍 Have to add...it did look a fantastic boat that I would gladly give a home to....unlike his bulldog like missus! 😉 Ah yes Brigand. He is an Air Traffic Controller who doesn’t like glider pilots! Likes to control things. Say no more! She is nice though.

Tautology alert. If you are impersonating something, you obviously can’t be that something. Anyway the whole thing of vaguely resembling the look and feel of something from the past is common amongst narrowboats. How many have roses and castles? (we don’t, thank god!). It’s a bit like a Mini. Or a Fiat 500. Or a beetle. Maybe a fake copy of the original but so much better than a bland eurocar. (Or clonecraft in boating terms). At least it has a distinctive look. The thing is, you have never actually seen a Hudson owner in a grandad shirt and neckerchief. That is reserved for historical narrowboat operators especially President. Ah but, say it quietly, A modern Fiat 500 is a rather marvelous machine, I'd be more comfortable driving a 500 than dredging the bottom of the BCN on a Hudson. I'd take the bus over driving any Mini - ancient or modern. Do you think so? A good few years ago when I hired the cheapest tiny car, I go a fiat 500 Abarth. Now that was some boy racer rocket machine (once I’d found the sport button). But recently we got a normal one as a hire car, I didn’t like it at all. Crap interior with crap ergonomics.

I love them, be it a Pop or Abarth. They are Italian design and manufacturing personified. Throw as many clichés at them as you like, nearly all will stick! Put it this way, would you prefer to tool around in a low rent 500 or a similar spec Ford Ka which shares most of the same bits? All the other manufacturers offerings in the supermini/city car sector are awful - Vauxhall Adam/Viva? I'd rather walk. PSA Group or Toyota Aygo? Nope, a bicycle has more appeal. The Koreans throw a good car together in the I10/Picanto but it has no soul, style or flair I like to think it shows I'm in touch with my feminine side and not a total red meat eating testosterone filled petrol head

for a while I was driving around in an X19 a smashing little thing, soon as I turned the key I started grinning ...... don't know how they do it but Fiat manage to put pure joy into some of their little cars !!! (a bit later a mate lent me an Abarth X19 for a few days ...... that was just ecstasy on 4 wheels) PPS although I still have memories of the original fiat 500 complete with the hand throttle, driving to the pub from college with six of us in it ..... 2 in the front, 2 in the back and 2 standing up with their heads through the sunshine roof ....... 0-50 .......... eventually

I traded a 128 3p for a bertone. Think it was a 1500cc. Was bloody quick car.

Owning the automotive equivalent of a Hudson, a tuned 3.4S Porsche, I feel suitably qualified to comment on all things car based...🙄 500 Arbarth Fiat...sooo kewl, Would like to get my daughter one when her Skoda Citigo lease is up in December. However, my Fiat Doblo works van, 2 years old, 4 AA callouts with random 'limp mode' issues ( I have an OBD reader so saw there was nothing amiss!) plus a new turbo and DP filter issues at 40k doesnt instil me with Fait confidence! On the other hand. 28k and 4 years with a 140bhp MultiAir TCT Alfa Mito and we have had one rear seat catch replaced along with a door mirror that folded past its stop. It has been utterly faultless. Tyres and brakes are exempt, you don't have a quick ish car and complain about tyre and brake wear or poor fuel consumption. The Arbarth was just too small to live with when the Dwarf was new, the Mito has a good amount of extra useable space.

Absolutely no regrets (other than residuals!)

Got my daughter a second hand Fiat 500 as her first car and its a great little runner. Once I remember about the clutch (I drive an automatic) I quite enjoy driving it. Which is just as well as she is off to Uni in September and not taking her car due to parking issues. His means that I will have to alternate between her can and mine to keep the battery charged and in running order.

Let me know when you're in or around Burscough area on ya way to Liverpool and I'll take you out for a beer if you fancy! 🍻 We are into Liverpool 20th July so you will have a better idea than me when we’ll be passing Burscough. We don’t tend to piss about, we’ve got 10 days to get from Fazeley to Liverpool. But yes, up for that. Im out of work all that week so will be around Burscough area...be good get you a beer/wine/gin & talk a bit of crap!😉 I normally take a day to overnight moorings in Melling Bridge 10 from Burscough, then its a day Through Wango Lane Aintree bridge to the docks.... Youll love it...make sure you move off your Salthouse moorings and cruise all the way upto end at Brunswick Docks, so deep, so wide and so clear, its a fantastic cruise seeing the old dock history been rejuvenated...pumpout and diesel available at the seaboat marina there! 🙂
