Thread closed? aw come on...theres a few of us may just want to derail..... Well... here's an appendage. I wanted to do Filance Lock by myself, as practice for when I'm on my own after Wednesday afternoon. The Witch has not let me do any locks so I'm rusty on the routine of single-handedness. I forgot about the stupid side (mid-line?) rope which is now entwined round the prop! What a Prize Twat! As it happens we drifted to where we wanted to be moored anyway, so we went to town to do our other stuff. I bought 10 spare hacksaw blades, just in case. Down the weed hatch now to free the rope + prop from their intimate relations. If any Jehovah's Witnesses pass and ask if I've found Jesus I'll say Yes he's down this bloody hole!!

Nasty - that would cut your fingers when you go down the weedhatch.

I don't know what a prop-protector is, or how it works. Anyway, I had the presence of mind not to panic too much and thought I'd invest an hour fiddling around with my fingers before summoning the junior hacksaw. It took just 5 minutes. I would say it was a lesson for me, but how can it be a lesson when 5 years ago I worked the Tardebigge flight alone perfectly and now I messed this first one up straight away. Just getting old and forgetful, and out of the rhythm/routine of being alone and working out things for myself. Witchy says we must go up the lock this evening so Silly Old Fox doesn't have any locks to deal with when she's gone. I think we all get out of practise and forget stuff...we cannot retain every bit of knowledge acquired so the brain just 'files' stuff away....

As this is the thread I'm currently taking off topic I'll carry on..... Offer in today for horror House but sadly bit on the low side...I know I'll never get back the ££££'s poured in(believe me this house has drank more lost money than a boat)..but the lady who offered had viewed this when I brought it..so can see the vast amount of renovation done...and I feel tad insulted by her offer.....just saying

If you feel you want to cut and run Patty, that's your choice and you don't have to justify it.
But you also don't have to accept a silly offer.
Your house, your choice, but I hope you're in a labour free flat very soon.

Nasty - that would cut your fingers when you go down the weedhatch. Essential bit of kit with no weed hatch I'd fit one to any boat, weed hatch or not.

I don't even understand what it is or how they work. Can anyone explain? And.... so why doesn't everyone have these as standard issue? www.prop-protector.co.uk/Put it this way, this chap struggled across the Levels www.canalworld.net/forums/index.php?/topic/97320-the-nene-ouse-navigation-link-weed-hair-algae/Stoppage my arse! 30" = 2' 6" so not as deep as he might like you to believe. We are 2' 8" no weed hatch and have got to Whittlesey from Salters Lode no problem at all They have done a cut in the worst places but it is perfectly acceptable condition and no different to the sort of conditions one usually encounters on the ML. Where a prop protector scores is you can chug along shedding the weed as fast as it tries to collect, only a couple of times in the shallower thickest bits did I have to Chuck back to clear the prop. There are many bits on the ML you don't want to be ferkling about down a weed hatch the water is quite grim in places. That said, before we had the prop protector a good bit of skill and knowledge meant the ML is no harder to boat on than the Serpentine in London. The Old West was by far a bigger pain in the arse than the ML this year - that wasn't half as bad as the doom mongers made out either

As to why more people don't fit them, modern boaters are an odd lot.
Thousands on paint and fridges but baulk at the idea of a few quid on something that improves your cruising.
I met a guy in Ely who refused to pay a quid to use the nearest high pressure tap to attempt a back flush of his blocked raw water cooling system (he'd buggered it up on the Old West) 'they are expensive at Cathedral Marine - I won't give them a penny' next question was do I know any good cheap boat fitters that could sort it? A go with a screwdriver, a hose and a pound coin was worth a roll of the dice. My answer? No chap, no I don't!

As this is the thread I'm currently taking off topic I'll carry on..... Excuse me, this is our travel blog! but haven't you just stopped travelling? We need Patty to relieve the tedium. Re house prices, we had 3 valuations when we sold ours, 40k difference between the top and the bottom, top one was a smart arse thinking we'd go with him cos we would get more. We put it on the market just as Northern Rock went tits up, had to drop the price eventually by 25k to get it sold. I'd had it for years so there was a lot of profit/equity in it. Suppose the point is, a house is worth what a buyer will pay, not what the seller wants.

I watched the video, and made a note to consider getting one, but I still have the feeling rope (or 'stuff') would just still get entwined and then how would you get it off if there's a razor sharp disc down there too... Chuck back 🚢👍

Excuse me, this is our travel blog! Suppose the point is, a house is worth what a buyer will pay, not what the seller wants. Yeah understand all that but what irritated me was she'd viewed the house as it was before it slurped over 100k from me in renovation costs..I knew I would never claw all that back...house is worth what its worth...but she knows all thats been done ..and I felt as if she was trying to rip me off. Selling, feeling like that is going to leave residual bitterness..I found myself looking at what I could sell that normally I would have left with the house and thats not who I am. This place has taught me a lesson and never again will I embark on renovation....I stand to be down at least 70k even without accepting what she offered. I've made expensive choices in life..I won't call buying this and working as i did a mistake as it helped in my recovery. The faults were disguised and hidden and Ive poured to much of me into here to just let it go at her price. I'm then limited to what i can get. If I'm stuck here longer I'll just carry on as before. 2 sons do not want me to sell and daughter wants me to move into a soulless box...if I follow my heart there's heartache ahead as I'll be going against 3 out of 4 of them..oh and number 4 done his normal ostrich act so he does't need to get involved...Heaven forbid that he should climb off the fence and actually support his mum. I would never criticise nor put my kids down verbally which is what I get...its tough being solo sometimes.. I'm getting the urge to do another runner... Rant over..

I reckon on a canal boat you could end up in serious shit with one of those. There is so much metallic waste about. Looks looks like they are designed to chop up floating debris but once you start picking things up from the bottom its a different kettle of fish. Mattress? Wire rope? I think it could be counterproductive. Also drilling into the shaft between prop and stern tube could weaken the shaft and make it prone to shearing if the prop strikes a hard object. Unlikely but it seems bad practice to me.
