Oh Lord! I think I remember that ...... it was stuck high up on a bank if I remember correctly and wasn't it a girl that bought it not Matty That was before CWDF fell into the hands of the dementors ...... I'm damned if I am going to go and look though Are you talking about Jeremy Scanlan's old hotel boat? I think I gave both books (Innocents Afloat was one) to Quaysider. I followed the story of the theft of that boat, was rudely scorned by several complete gits over on Canalworld about my interest in it, and was in contact by e-mail with the girl who bought it with her boyfriend. I forget the name of the boat at the moment. I hope the thief and the scumbag who bought it off the thief have both died in agony. We bought both books off Jeremy himself in Lapworth in June 2013. He told us we should have closed the lock gates not by stopping and doing them by hand, as we did, but by reversing and shoving them shut with the arse end of the boat.

If it is the one I am thinking about, I seem to remember it was right up on the bank having been swept there in floods, was in a shocking condition and a rare gamble on how it would be retrieved because of access problems ...... I don't remember anything about theft or having been sold by the thief

I don't remember anything about theft or having been sold by the thief Very quickly, as sauna is ready.... as I recall, Jeremy Scanlan operated, in a very civilised manner, his own, quite long (72 footer?) hotel boat with his wife. His wife was born at the lock keeper's cottage at Lapworth, I think. Jeremy was an American and has now moved back to the USA, his wife died around 3-4 years ago. His books, two of them, are worth reading, written nicely. I gave mine to Quaysider. When it was time to retire, Jeremy 'sold' his boat to a man who sent the first two payments and then nothing more. I don't remember if the Police caught up with that con man. Anyway, the slimy thief flogged the boat onto some hapless smelly old tramp who snaffled the boat away to Tewkesbury and more or less abandoned it. The boat was swept up onto the concrete bank during a flood and was left high and dry for a couple of years, until the nice couple (girl and boy) bought it. She told me they intended to restore it into a good condition. I believe Jeremy's books are 'vanity published' (he paid for them to be made into books?), but they're an OK read - I enjoyed them, and I wish Jeremy would have been 20 years younger and been a member of Thunderboat. Innocents Afloat is the first book, I think the second is 'Hotel Boat'. I liked his style and attitude, a real gentleman. It was very wrong for him to be had by a scummy English con man, and a filthy old tramp. It is sad how many nice people become old and snuffit, and the world is bereft of them, although I did laugh a lot at Nick's remark to Tony Dunkley in June ("my only consolation is that you are old and will soon be dead"). Luckily some young 'uns pop up, such as Magnetman and Gazza - the amount of knowledge they have in their heads is astounding.
