We stopped off at the services as we left Oxford and whilst I was busy with rubbish and cassette, Jane was chatting to a lady boater. The lady was trying to reduce the amount of stuff stored on her roof (bike, hose etc) as the lift bridges and willow trees on this stretch can be tricky. But storage is always awkward for liveaboards, especially on forty foot boats The lady was a real character, with a colourful history, and apparently fascinating company. As we cruised away, Jane was telling me of their conversation. The thought struck me that we all have a story to tell, of how we got into boats, what we enjoy and don't enjoy, whether we're into silence and candle light, or all mod cons and gadgets. There is no right or wrong way of doing it, we just all bring our own experience, preferences and styles to boating. Rog

As we cruised away, Jane was telling me of their conversation. Rog Kenneth Grahame got it to a tee π’π»π Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing β absolutely nothing β half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. Simply messing... about in boats β or with boats. In or out of βem, it doesn't matter. Nothing seems really to matter, that's the charm of it. Whether you get away, or whether you don't; whether you arrive at your destination or whether you reach somewhere else, or whether you never get anywhere at all, you're always busy, and you never do anything in particular; and when you've done it there's always something else to do, and you can do it if you like, but you'd much better not.

I've never heard anyone say either of those things apart from Telemachus and he only comes on here for a giggle.

But we are all scruffy bastards. Plus, we smell of diesel and wood smoke.

I met a couple who lived on a boat while they rented out the house. Nice boat they were not scruffy however the bloke was always fishing for pike and for this reason I judged him very harshly. He will forever be etched in my mind as a pike eater. In fact even his much younger wife was a pike eater.
Nice enough people, yellow Rayburn in the boat Gardner 4 pot engine shiny paint but eating pike?? What !!
