Just started posting here again but I'm off to India on Monday. Kerala in the south, 5 weeks of eating the likes of dosa, idli and thali, can't wait. Hopefully there will be some waves (unreliable) so I can do some surfing. Otherwise I'll rent a Royal Enfield and travel around.
Anyone been?

Why go to India when you can go to West Bromwich for the price of a train ticket? "Asian drug gangs, usually of Pakistani, Bengali, Tamil and Indian descent are present in the United Kingdom. Bangladeshi gangs are found mostly in Tower Hamlets. Notable Tamil Hindu gangs include Harrow Tamils and Wembley Tamils. In London, Indian gangs are mostly concentrated in Southall, Brent and Harrow. However Asians of Pakistani descent have been recorded to have the highest number of Asian gangs in the United Kingdom. Notable Pakistani gangs in the United Kingdom are often associated with the importation and distribution of heroin. Examples of Pakistani drug gangs in the United Kingdom outside of the major urban centres can be found in Bedford, Redbridge, Waltham Forest, Newham, Luton, Middlesbrough and Oldham. Drug squad officers in 2003 claimed that Asian gangs were actively seeking to corner the heroin market." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gangs_in_the_United_Kingdom

I've never been to India. I don't intend to. Similar with Morocco. Despite the fact my kids are effectively half Moroccan in terms of blood I never want to go to any of these dumps. Their mum agrees with me on this.
What is it that people like about these places?

I've been a couple of times. First time was to the Himalayas, trekking, climbing, abseiling, rafting, that kind of thing. I then flew to Delhi on a one way ticket and spent 6 months making my way south by train and bus. Hated it at first, it was a massive culture shock but over time, I don't know, it got into me somehow. That was 11 years ago and while I've no intention of living out of a backpack like that again, prefer to have a base now, I'm really looking forward to it.

Have a look at the creepy men standing in the queue at major airports for the planes to 'Bangkok' and 'Phuket'.

I suppose another factor is cost. I don't have buckets of money and prefer to go away for a month or more. If I go somewhere 'civilised' , ok the flight will cost less but there's no way I could live for less than maybe 40 quid a day, and that's probably pushing it. In India I can get a room and eat great food 3 times a day for a fiver.

There's a nice narrow boat built at Braunston called "Clent" it used to be part of the UCC hire fleet. Another one was "Laughton". Quality boats.

The only places I've seen the Kiddie thing going on though is Sianoukville in Cambodia, and Pattaya in Thailand. The latter really is a horrible place, I'd recommend giving it a very wide berth.
