That sounds very sensible Perhaps an ex hire GRP cruiser. I often think the ideal boat for when older would be something like a carribean cruiser. I've driven one and it was really nice having indoor steering. Also smaller and lighter so easier to manage. I also like the little 25ft broads cruisers but possibly a bit small for full time residential. As for clutter one solution people use is to just chuck stuff in the River. I don't advocate it but can understand it as it is a convenient way to "let it go"

I don't advocate it but can understand it as it is a convenient way to "let it go" I am far from being a self acclaimed "Stable Genius", but I think that I'm still a fairly sensible person, that's the impression I get when I see the other guy in the mirror. I'm not too fussed about the material of the hull, but I prefere steel if something suitable comes up. If I would be in a slightly (read much) better shap, I would most likely build a steel hull of between 11 and 14m lenght and between 4m50 and 4m75 wide. Boats like that do only very rarely come up, and buying a longer boat to shorten to the desired lenght is almost as much work as buiding a new hull of which you know the hull thicknesses as you started with new plates. The hullshape wouldn't be nice round curves, but of a much easier straighter shape, it doesn't have to be a beauty price winner, as long as it's spacious and comfortable enough to live on until ............ Chucking stuff in the river would surely block the possibility of ever being able to leave there again, and there are still 2 lock ups to empty too, it will all need a certain time. A bargee friend of mine told me that the Gendarmerie were visiting boats here to check their papers, fire-extinguishers and life saving equipment, hope they'll miss my boat, as I really can't let them come in, and I had trouble with them 6 years ago because they didn't want to accept my brand new life vest, this only because they didn't have "CE" marked on their labels, but they were part of the approuved equipment I had on my passengerboat, on the label is marked that they are/were approuved by the French Merchandise Navy, and now for a pleasure boat they wouldn't be good enough just because of the 2 missing letters that didn't exist at the time I bought them ? Peter.

Your probably right about Derrick not minding getting free advertising π I really like the way you put the officious pen pusher onto the back foot, it's always better to use your intelligence to beat them rather than physical violence. No matter how much you'd like to smash up his office. I'm not surprised it comes down to paying them more money, this just seems to be the way of the world nowadays Unfortunately. officialdom always moves slow, but it sounds like your going to be able to stay which is the important thing. So I'm glad you seem to have turned a corner with it. I can understand your frustration at having to go through all the hassle, it's wrong that people like this can cause such stress for people without any comeback. I remember when cart where threatening to take my boat all the time it made my life very stressful for no valid reason which in my book is totally wrong. Anyway hopefully once you've sorted it, they will leave you alone for a long time. regards Kris If I finally get my new mooring agreement, it will be for another 5 years, but I really hope that I will find the time and the courage to get rid of the stuff that I've collected and that's filling my boat so much that I can't let anyone come on board (I often even hesitate to go in myself), it's madness, and I know that I could live without (most of) all that stuff. I would like to clear the mess, tidy up the boat, a coat of fresh paint and varnish and then try to find a new owner who's prepared to give me a decent amount of money (I'll accept gold bars aswell), and sell the small barge of my avatar too, and then buy another smaller boat that will allow me to cruise around during the season and find a winter-mooring with water and electricity for the months that I won't cruise. This all sounds like a dream, but it should be possible. Peter. I've offered before Peter but I'll offer again, I'd be willing to come and help you clear some stuff. Sometimes in these situations you need someone else who isn't connected to the stuff emotionally to help get rid of it. I really mean it If you need a hand let me know. I enjoy helping people to realise their dreams.

I really do appreciate your very kind offer Kris, you are a good man willing to help out clearing someone else's stuff, and by doing so helping them to realise their dreams. But, I really have to clear this mess myself, at least for as much as I can, before anyone else could enter here without me having to stay outside. If I'm ever able to get that done, then you would be welcome for a visit without having to do any stuff clearing. Thank you very much for your kind offer anyway, Peter.

No worries Peter, I could bring a tent and stay outside of the boatπ Anyway it might be a good idea to get someone else to give you a hand. I hope to meet you in person one day and as you seem to be have an aversion to visiting England I might have to cross the channel to make it happen.

No Kris, you couldn't be more wrong than that, I've always enjoyed visiting the UK very much, and I'd everything planned for this years visit to Skipton and the sadly no more existing Waterways Museum at Goole etc. etc, as you surely remember. It was only the threatening of VNF that stopped me from going, as I could not get any straight answers from them, and the mails I sent to different VNF offices didn't get replies, even a registred letter to the director for which the post delivered me the stamped paper that it had been delivered at the directors office, was never answered. Because of that I didn't go to the UK, as I wouldn't have been able to enjoy my time there with the possible misery that they could create during my absence. Normally (a strange word if it concerns French bureauocracy) the situation should be better by next year. That is if I manage to sell my small barge before the end of january 2020 (preferably much earlier) as my mooring agreement there expires then, and I don't want to get into the same problems and expenses that I've been in here with the boat I'm living on most of the time. Peter.

Anyway I hope to see you at some stage and wish you lots of luck with sorting all your stuff out.

Grit your teeth and make a start ... the first hour must be the worst ... don't be held back by inconsequential things. Hope to meet one day when life is good again Rog

Heading back to Naburn now, with current (boards in amber) doing 6.5 to 7 mph at 1800rpm. Verily whizzing along!

Stopped at Linton lock for water. There is an interesting hydro scheme here - an Archimedes screw type turbine than generates up to 380kw. One has to wonder why more river locks donβt have such things.
