And can I just mention Vazon sliding railway bridge at Keadby. Very impressive! Didn’t take any decent pics but someone else did: you are right it's quite a bit of kit !!! I thought it great that you just steam up towards it and blow your horn and wait for a little. I understand that it is the only rail bridge opened like this anywhere.

Following on from our little incident of coming round the corner downstream to find Selby road bridge blocked by a large tree, I was talking to a chap on the pontoon at Torksey today and he mentioned that when the Humber barges used to go up the river past Selby, a bylaw required them to go through the bridges backwards - they had to round up before the bridges and then drift backwards through them with the current.
Not heard that before but if true I suppose it does make sense. A loaded barge colliding with part of the bridge structure at speed, or an obstacle attached to the bridge structure, could do a lot of damage.

A loaded barge colliding with part of the bridge structure at speed, or an obstacle attached to the bridge structure, could do a lot of damage. rounding up and dropping down was used a lot by commercials through several bits of the Northern system. Talked to many ex bargemen that I have met up here (with Sabina being an old Harker tanker quite a few stop and chat) and there are a lot of tails of hairy trips down both rivers with tows and tiny engines ...... different breed. That approach to Nether lock coming downstream is not easy with a 60 odd footer but with something twice as long ....phew With the 130 Hp in Sabina have managed to shoot bridges so far but sometimes that can be a bit hairy ..... going through a bridge hole at 10 kts .... even if there is plenty of room ....can be a bit but clenching
