Great. Has it been painted with zinga or similar? What are the rows of things just above the waterline - ah sussed it scuppers. What are the two lumps then, below them?

Jotun's paint on there. The two mystery boxes are gearbox oil coolers. PRM Delta gearboxes on BMC 1.5 units each with their own cooling system separate from engine cooling circuits . Austin J4 manuals on the boat one for each engine The scuppers are to clear water from decks. Stainless frames with rubber flaps bolted on. Same as you see on trawlers. The engine room is like new. Engines fired up lovely nice and clean and quiet running. I think they are the later 1.5 units with the 5 bearings. Early BMC Captains had a habit of breaking crankshafts on account of only having 3 mains. It's really bizarre that the boat is 35 years old. It's just because the design is so well thought out and executed it has resulted in a very durable and tidy little vessel. It's a modern classic boat.

I might be back up that way as I did not bring the very large (2ft6) round orange bow fenders that were with the boat. Thought I would not need them. Will find out when I start bringing it through Thames locks. So I might be going back to collect them. If you do come back, give me a call first, alternatively I could bring them down for you to collect in Brentford nearer end of the month.

That is a nice little boatyard, went in there when we were working on Cawood and was well impressed ..... just sorry I didn't know that boatwas up for sale at the time, otherwise you might not have got a look in I remember looking at it (it was the otherside of the shed at the time) and thinking what a neat little job. We put the Cawood on the EA grid just the other side of the road from the boatyard to scrape (incidentally, what a waste of money ..... they built it specially for their barge but made it too narrow to work on safely .... and then sold the only stoning barge they had) Bringing Cawood up the river on the flood when she had literally tons of weed and growth on her and handled like a drunken hippo, going between the floating pontoons and under the bridge was ...... interesting

Its a bit of an odd story because people kept asking about the boat but owner did not want to sell it then it turned up on Apolloduck and I found it.
There is a fair bit of pitting on the hull I wouldn't be surprised if there were bits under 4mm thick which is sometimes a problem for insurance. I'll do 3rd party anyway so not all that concerned about that.
Overall its in pretty good shape really. I'll just keep it grey topsides I'm not at all bothered about shiny boats just keep on top of the rust patches then it should be okay.
I think the hull has been done in Jotuns epoxy the tins are on board I will check that as that would certainly be a bonus.
Main positive is the bilges show no signs of ever having had water in there its all dry and dusty.

Thanks for that Nigel I will find out where they are and may take you up on your kind offer. I think they are still at the yard but not sure.

On a boat with so much equipment I was quite surprised to find only one very small underwater hull penetration. An inch diameter bronze sea water inlet for toilet water. This has been capped off with compression fittings inside the boat. I guess the dedicated fresh water tank was found to be more suitable for that purpose. Belt and braces having sea water as well as fresh for flushing so I guess the sea water option was found to be surplus to requirements.

I like the way the fuse box is labelled.
It's mounted in a cupboard onto an unpainted plywood surface. There are no actual labels just writing in pencil beside each fuse. What a good idea ! Labels come off but something like a 2B pencil onto plywood is going to stay forever if it is dry.
"Chlorine water" what's that all about? One of the fuses has those words written beside it.

It's possible. Bearing in mind the boat is a post nuclear apocalypse survival shelter nothing would surprise me.

I'm going to moor it by a towpath for 11 months and claim the gearboxes need fixing.

The working deck is about 10x8 feet so enough room to store loads of boxes of rotting shit. You could use large boxes as there are two derrick cranes one for each side.
storing shit in this was is not really my scene but it would be feasible.
