Don't be surprised if you're still discovering stuff thats missing in weeks to come. We had a pair of radios still in their bos unused ... three months after the break in my young neice visited and I went to get them out for her to play with and realised that they'd gone. Hope the bad feelings are diminishing a little Rog yes it is difficult as I had to drive there and back in one day so I am sure i missed other things. The lady at the claims department was very helpful though and said they would keep the claim open for 12mths exactly because of that. Fortunately I have never had to make an insurance claim (other than vehicle) so I was a bit daunted especially trying to explain what they took. For example they took all my tools, well how do you value or provide receipts for that, also a small box with all my bits of electrical stuff, like tape and connectors/fuses etc - no great value - but also inside was my soldering kit and multi meter. They took all our canal guides and some really interesting books including one folder containing the photographic history of the boat being built, no use to them so will probably end up in the canal, not of monetary value but interesting to use and can't be replaced. This is the bit that makes you feel violated, other things can be replaced but not things that are personal. The previous owners left us two reclining leather armchairs, which we originally we going to change but they were so comfy we kept them, the ****s took the matching footstools so how do I go about valuing those?

1. How about making a complaint about the Police? We watch Endeavour and Midsomer Murders and know they can find the guilty persons if they really want to. 2. No evidence it was 'pikeys'/'travellers'. If boaters, then probably those without a licence, and they wouldn't be around if CRT pulled their filthy boats off the canals and crushed them (with the owners inside). 3. Go and steal dogless's ropes and windlasses and batteries and kettle... then he will "have a tale to tell over a pint" - I mean, it's only stuff, isn't it? Well there is another story!! We were moored in Loughbourgh when someone ran along the roof. Partner went outside and two lads jumped him started hitting him so I got outside and pulled one off and gave the other the hardest kick to the back of his knee that I could. Ian was bruised and bleeding, and shocked, he has a form of Aspergers so was very upset, so I rang the police. At that time the lads were with another and two girls sat on a bench 200yds away, this was at about 6pm. The police said they come right away as I stressed the culprits were still around. At 9.30pm they rang back saying they couldn't get to us and it would be impossible to catch them now anyway. I was brought up to have respect for the police but now I only hold them in contempt. When my partner and I moved to Wales are closest neighbours started a campaign of abuse against us that got so bad we had to put up CCTV cameras with audio, as it was what they were saying as much as what they were doing, including knocking me over in his landrover. I will keep the story short but it went on for over 3 years and drove me to try and consider suicide. Despite all our evidence the police said, and I quote "they would not prosecute them as they fostered children and would lose a major part of their income stream" (we have this in writing). We tried to take out a private prosecution but the police convinced the CPS not to allow it. This is only a small percent what our neighbours did and of how the police handled things they were so biased (I could go on with examples) So we are now in the process of suing Dyffed Powys Police. At this time DPP were being investigated as two officers were found having sex in an office whilst on duty, another was prosecuted for drug dealing and a third was prosecuted for sexual harassment when they subjected a new recruit to an 'initiation ceremony' I wont go into details but it was disgusting and you can look it up if you want. So forgive me if I have no regard for the police. Sorry to go off piste.... I think there are instances where the police let people down very badly and it sounds as if you have had a very raw deal They should be made accountable for their actions..or lack of action. Prejudice and narrow-minded people can make life hell ..I left my flat partly because of the neighbours though I did not suffer remotely like you have. I was targeted because of my son..not my difficult son but the one who'd been in the Marines who the 'neighbours' thought was doing drugs(he wasn't)..They maybe didn't want blokes like him and a few of his friends who visited. anyway from that I then became blamed for so much stupidity it made a decision very easy. There was no violence but at the time I was struggling with mental health collapse and bit of a recluse and when you are perceived as different tis a short step from that to being 'at fault or he reason for everything that is wrong in a community' They even tried to allege that I shouldn't have my dog..Its a time in my life when I should have been left in peace and I wasn't. Trouble is when u don't conform or fit in they don't want you in their hallowed neighbourhood. I didn't make the effort here to mix but people around me here have been extremely welcoming but I wait for whatever..cannot quite believe that communities can be nice places to live.

My little sis has been broken into 8 times ..she now doesn't bother to replace anything unless its stuff they use. The last time they left the pillow covers they'd taken off for their hoard on top f the stairs as nowt of value..the time before they took place mats with gold coloured rim..yep they actually thought they had gold in them. I would never keep on living in a place thats been targeted that often. You hear stories of thieves using the covers off chairs and sofas to carry their 'haul' and of people being broken into again shortly after they have replaced the stole items. Sad times. I know I sound like a grumpy old man but when I was a kid you were scared of the police but people left their doors open or many, like us, had the door key on a piece of string which you pulled up through the letter box.....how naive we were....

Some communities are welcoming and helpful. It’s the reason we haven’t moved house. It’s to big and we rattle around in it. The gardens to much work for us as we spend most of our time on the boat. But you can’t good neighbours. My fingers are crossed for you Patty and obviously all the best to JubJub.

The thing is we moved to a rural area for the piece and quiet. Although I say it we have transformed the cottage and people stop to say how nice it is now. Our garden is raised and we put up a summerhouse. The neighbours said it was illegal as it overlooked their garden and that we could be paedophiles, the police forced the Planning Dept to come out and check it. I knew the planning lady as we had spent months talking over the plans for our extension. She came out and basically told the police to 'do one' and wasn't even going into the garden to check it and they had wasted her time. When asked by the police if he really thought we were paedophiles are neighbour replied 'Yes, for all I know' This was recorded on CCTV/Auio, the police ignored it.

I hope things have improved for you and that the insurance pays out. Ive had a local resident who obviously had pull with the local police, send the police to my boat for no obvious reason ( other than its a scruffy boat and they didnt want it moored near their posh house.) . You should have seen him run down the towpath, when i produced a note book and asked for his name and number and what staion he was from.

We tried to take out a private prosecution but the police convinced the CPS not to allow it. The ability of the Crown Prosecution to take over and shut down private prosecutions is quite appalling. I can see the need for some such power, to be exercised with extreme discretion, but given the apparently over-taxed burden of conducting or not their own cases, it does not seem to be a proportionate use of their resources to take over in order to shut down those conducted at the cost and risk of the victims of a crime. For those with the necessary fortitude there is, however, a right to Judicial Review of any decision to take over and abandon a prosecution – though I have become increasingly disillusioned with that particular route. Better still, though with some of the same cynicism applicable, the victim has a right to demand that the CPS undertake a review of any such decision, with the hope of avoiding action through the High Court. The CPS used to reject the idea that the public had any such right, but since an unsavoury appeal case in 2011, they have been found obligated to conduct such a Review on demand of an aggrieved victim of crime.

I am one of the younger members here and even I cam remember those times. Growing up, next to our front door was a cupboard, had the electric meter in and we used it for wellies and stuff. We lived on a normal housing estate and there was always a spare key hanging up in there. I was a latchkey kid but I never took a key anywhere, I think half the houses in our culdesac also had a front door key to our house.
