Do you know how perspective works in one dimensional photographs ? Rog has no relevance to "professional" boat movers who take the wrong line into canal bridgeholes situated on turns, . . and whose eyesight is so bad that they need a "spotter" to warn them that they're approaching a bend (turn) or a bridge. If he got around the bend (turn) and the bridge without hitting either, then he can't have done too much wrong, and using a spotter to look through a bridge that does not offer a clear view to the steerer is an indication of how responsibly the individual sees his "profession". It's certainly a lot more friendly than many of the so called experienced steerers of traditional craft who just press on regardless of other craft when negotiating such obstacles.

Yes he did a great job brummieboy ... it was a chaotic obstacle course which he negotiated slowly and with great skill. His spotter was a wise precaution on a turn around day for the many hire boat companies in the area (hirers being the one group of boaters who most needed a warning of this unsuitable craft, but wouldn't be signed up for alerts so wouldn't get it). He also managed it without boring the arse of everyone with stories of how it used to be, and insults mixed with irrelevant advice. Rog

Rog Tony's boating anecdotes are not the issue per se - it's more the hostile tone he injects into (almost) everything he posts.

As I understand 'bank effect', is it if you go slowly enough the water you push to the bank returns and holds you away from it. If you go too fast, you hit the bank before the returning water can repel you. Seriously, surely it's a name that someone has conjured up to explain what an experienced boater knows instinctively without bothering to add to the mystical vocabulary that seems to have evolved around canals and rivers.

It's a bit like 'ground effect' which is doubtless something aviators also have made up a name for.

Plus of course the fact that wide beam slab sided canal monstrosity awful terrible you really don't even want to see one of these things "boats" do not handle like a real boat.
Let's just think about levers.

It's a bit like 'ground effect' which is doubtless something aviators also have made up a name for. Cormorants use the surface effect to save energy. It's over water so could not really be called the ground effect but it is a real thing. There was that mad Russian thing with all the missile launchers. The Ekranoplan. What a wicked piece of hardware ! Brilliant product of some incredibly clever minds. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lun-class_ekranoplan

That would be bloody handy in Henley on a hot sunny day "I say first officer of the watch, did we clear them?"

That thing was a ridiculous waste of time. The chaps who produced this beautiful item knew what they were doing.

Not enough engines You need a Dornier.

An ugly monstrosity no-doubt dreamt up at the Munich beer festival. There were many Short Sunderlands still flying long after the last Dornier bit the dust.

Nope. Your knowledge of dimensions is rather less than your knowledge of boating. Hopefully. Another inconsenquential nobody type of post if I may be so bold. You may be as bold as you like. Whether anyone considers it consequential is another matter.
