It seems a pity that the only posts on thunderboat this morning are unpleasantness on the Barrowford thread, so I thought I'd start a new one in the hope that folks can offer a more positive view Ready to leave for work and the boss rang to offer us the day off (saving money again). Beautiful sunrise and a bright clear day so far. Got some errands to run so we're going to enjoy a day off together. What are you upto today ? Rog

Finished slaving over a desk for the day, mind you I spent the last 4 days offshore on a vessel attendance.

We are moored outside the Plough, Huddlesford. As expected, the canal is iced over so going no-where today. Might hit the Plough this evening for Landlord and some grub. Before that a walk through a wintry wonderland. Slightly nervous about my Lubbly Jubbly Lithiums this morning - that they’d be too cold to charge. They are in the engine room so “inside” but not in a heated space (when the engine is off). Fortunately they were at 7C which is ok, so I stuffed a couple of hundred amps into them for a while, that should see us through until tomorrow despite our prodigious use of electrical power (electric kettle etc).
Slight problem with the stove, it wasn’t burning well and then we noticed the CO monitor showing 15 ppm. Flue getting blocked again, I need to remove it and clear it out from the bottom. A bend near the top prevents poking things down too far and there is a lot of stenosis near the bottom. However poking the small boat hook down has helped, it’s burning better and the CO has gone back to zero. But that is only a temporary fix, I need to do the job properly once back in the Marina.
We still haven’t heard from Jeff’s parents, their power is still off so we are fretting a bit and wishing we hadn’t chosen this moment to go to the boat. Jeff’s sister is driving up from Perth today to check up on them.

Hope all's well Telemachus ... let us know and try and enjoy your day Rog Thanks. You’d think by now they could have phoned us, but being old they probably don’t realise you can charge your phone in the car! Although to be fair a lot of phone masts are not working so maybe they can’t get a signal. Of course if they had an old fashioned phone that didn’t need mains power, they could probably have used the land line.

We came home for a few days last week as we had our boosters Friday. Glad we did as it really knocked me about. Brighter today, but still a banging headache and ache all over. Ali had nothing but a sore arm, so she’s decided I have man flu. At least we missed the ice.

Canal crispy but the swans have managed to swim past. If they come back I will have to feed them, they have stripped the grass of the banks already wherever they could reach. I have them tamed and can hand feed them without any aggression. 3 Degrees ( cue music ) so it will be thawing soon.
One crazy boater past this morning.
Burning plenty of coal, toasty inside, horrid out. Fortunately pumped out and watered yesterday whilst it was snowing, got back without any drama.

We had an enjoyable walk from Huddlesford Jn down the road that parallels the Lichfield canal arm (which is currently Lichfield Cruising Club (LCC) moorings, and surprisingly long). Turned left onto Clappers Lane (so-called because the cars go like the clappers on this narrow lane, covered in ice and slush, with no pavement) to the bridge over the canal at the end of the “arm” - the Lichfield canal continues on after the bridge but it’s derelict. Interesting to see major works in progress whereby LCC are building offline moorings (aka a small Marina, complete with dry dock etc) because HS2 is coming past, flattening the bridge built by volunteers of the Lichfield and Hatherton canal trust (which will be moved up the cut a few yards). All this knowledge gleaned by chatting to a contractor working at the site, who also happened to be an (ex) boater.
Continued the circular walk via Whittington and back to Huddlesford, but failing to quite get back to the boat due to accidentally falling into the Plough, whereupon we weren’t allowed to leave until we’d bought 2 pints (of Landlord, in my case).

It was a lovely morning on the River. Quite a heavy frost.
Of course Dulcinea is always lovely and warm as it has a very large fire compared with the cabin size. Sleeping quarters stay very cool as beds are on the waterline but step up into the cabin and it's a difference of 10+ degrees C.
Brilliant bit of boat design that one.
Now back in the inner city being the responsible parent, lit the fire on the barge but it always takes ages to heat and I am allergic to electric since the 50% increase in costs from CRT. 16p per unit up to 24p in the blink of an eye.
Oops more coal !

Lovely photo patty ... Freya's very bonny. Upto three degrees and a thaw here too ... got our chores sorted very enjoyably although it's getting dark already now we're back home. The beer in the Plough is always very good in my experience, but not cheap. Hope you're feeling better soon ianaliRog

Heard from Jeff’s sister, their parents are fine. They were stuck in their powerless cottage for a couple of days due to trees down across their little road, but the farmer cleared them eventually and they were able to go to the shops /cafe in Ellon. They managed to heat some food on the wood burner. This afternoon they phoned us, power now back on in the house after a full 3 days of no power.
