But Rishi can't claim we can't afford it, he has just committed to spending all the money saved on his own short term(ish) infrastructure projects.

How the saved HS2 money will be spent
We've just had some more detail from the prime minister's office on where the HS2 budget will be spent.
Here's how it breaks down:
Scrapping the rest of HS2 will save £36bn Of that, £19.8bn will be spent in the North £9.6bn will be spent in the Midlands £6.5bn will be spent in the rest of the country
On top of that, there will be a further £12bn to "better connect Manchester to Liverpool"
From the BBC, via the PM's office.
So it is a commitment to spend 47.9bn against a saving of 36bn..............

Not much detail there...it seems fairly obvious that Rishi has cancelled HS2 to give himself some wriggle-room prior t'election...
It's going to be a long road to the end of '24.

Keeping the £2 bus fare in England until the end of December 2024
"Billions" to fix potholes on roads
A new £3.3bn fund for road resurfacing

It's sad that a project has been scrapped that would have increased rail capacity overall. Something that is badly needed as freight traffic is limited. Having said that, I rely on the roads much more than the occasional rail journey so anything that addresses the problems of potholes and congestion would be welcome. The problem is that the people who will manage the funds are so out of touch with reality and have already shown they are incapable of managing projects effectively.

Rail is unreliable, whereby along with the comfort and convenience of a car is not. What's the point of having a fast rail service that only runs sporadically.

I always thought fixing potholes came out of routine maintenance budgets, there must be some bloody big potholes to require infrastructure budget investment!

Whilst it has very little bearing on the cancellation of a major transport project, a simple move like retaining the £2 bus fare cap could seriously help very many people and save numerous car journeys - yet it has barely been publicised.

Agreed, but it is yet another short term subsidy rather than a long term idea.

The vested interests of the media who wish to see the elected government brought down will never publicise any good news. We have been told for too long how our economy is tanking when the truth is that after a period of global pressures has been detrimental to the western world in general, our economy is in much better shape and is performing better than the E.U and individually most of its member states. The USA is in financial turmoil with the threat of government furlough ever present because they cannot agree on a fiscal package.
