Here is a pic of my dark nights winter project. Fancied building an R.O.V to have a bit of fun with and bought the plans to build this. Have bought most of the bits gradually over the summer, just need to buy the plastic pipe to make up the main body. Anyone else tried anything like it? I know it's not a boat as such but........ 😀 Ps. Should be good for examining the hull whilst still in the water. goo.gl/images/hl77sP

Good idea - and you could lend this to lots of other boaters for a small fee. What would be nice is a mapping system, like Google Street View, where the whole of the hull could be scanned with this camera and the info saved digitally, so you can always open your home computer and have a browse of your hull if you like. A clever boatyard would make a dock which contains only very clean water for this purpose of photographing/examining hulls. Another way to look at a hull in such a controlled bay would be by radar, you'd quickly get a picture of the hull and printed out in a jiffy. If such a bay were to be to one side of a canal, any boat could just pop in or phone up to make an appointment, and have their hull scanned as they pass through the 'layby'.

Sounds great. I did once make a "canal bed viewer" which was a CCTV cam on a paint roller handle. Good for checking the propeller etc. Will be interested to see how you get on with it

That looks interesting. What size pipe is the body? The body is made of plastic soil pipe. It's all plastic drainage pipe available from diy stores.

OK, will have a ferkle about tomorrow. What does it say for length? We are coming home from Norwich so a detour your way is not a big issue.

Right,
4" (110mm OD ) soil pipe is no problem - I have tucked a bit away to stop it going AWOL
We keep 2" nominal bore class e ABS pipe, this has an OD of 60mm - any good to you?

Yeah, the 2" Nb pipe will be just the ticket... Thanks. I've now got the camera, the camera dome, the lights, the 40 MHz controller, servo and various other bits and pieces. I'm going to use DC brushless motors as they will run in fresh water without being enclosed so won't leak at depth. I reckon it will cost around £250 all in and put a smile on my face...😀

I am intrigued as to why you want a 40MHz controller unless it has a long aerial that sticks up out of the water as RF will not penetrate the water.
